After thouroughly enjoying the abandonned race track thread, i figured i'd start another one with my other favorite car related place.
      The salvage yard...

anybody know of old slavage yard that are now closed, that still ahve cars in them? or even some old junkyards you used to go to as a child?

here are a few that are local to me
this one is right off of Champlain ST. in dieppe, after the airport.
it used to be a scrapyard untill buddy got sick and its since just been close.

this one here is in back of a VW aircooled mechanics shop. stuff has been there for years one day i'll go in and see, maybe enven snap some pics.

Good lord, where do you live? The landscape in both those pics looks like a whole lot o'nothin.

So what you're saying is that you want to salvage a salvage yard?

      I need to get pics

There is an old junkyard out around here thats not realy a junkyard anymore due to zoning stuff. However, the property still has 400+ cars on it, and the owner will let people come in and look around. Hes real cool about it, older hippie guy..kind of burned out. He gathered all of the cars back in the 70's, and the yard closed in the 80's Most of his iron is from the 60's up until about 75, some newer but plenty older. The oldest I saw out there was a 23 chevy touring..at least thats what he said. Whats nuts is that he knows exactly what each car has on it, and where each car is. Now he owns a hemp and beads store

Ok. My house in the country has an old salvage yard across the street. It is not really completely abandoned, but it is not really 'open for business' either. (Shrug) It's a family thing, and ever since the elder family member that ran it left the scene- it has been neglected. Interesting

Anyways- I post it because it is neglected, and I think the proximity to a dirt oval track is 'telling'.

Here is an area view to show the proximity to the dirt oval track.

A closer image showing my house in the country (a work in progress for investment purposes). And yes- my neighbors LOVE ponds.

And here is the salvage yard- there is still activity there- but not really retail business. This place used to be well known with the locals for actually installing the used parts for a fair price (unusual for a salvage yard). They also sold decent vehicles cheap. Well, maybe 'decent' is a stretch.

The Iron Triangle. Thirteen blocks of an automotive graveyards, chop shops, general mechanics, and toxic waste. I love going there! That baseball stadium in the first pic is Shea Stadium where the Mets play.

I could be wrong, but I think this is where Naughty By Nature made their "Hip Hop Horay" video.

This is one thread that needs to be "salvaged" (bumped) often from the back pages of this forum. Good idea following the footsteps of the Abandoned tracks thread.

Apologize for bumping this old thread, but I didn't find anything else related where I could post.

I just want to talk about the Kaufdorf salvage yard. Now, some of you may already heard about it because of its insane classic content. Early VW busses, porsches 356, many classic american cars among others ... That's almost 500 cars that are ... well were laying scattered in a piece of Swiss wood, lost in the middle of the countryside.

Last year I started a new job in Switzerland, at that time, I already heard about Kaufdorf, but it took me 6 month to realize that I was living just a handful of km away from it.

So, as soon as I realized that, one day after work I went there to check it out. Unfortunately, I soon realized that the Kaufdorf Autofriedhof (Kaufdorf car cemetery) was just a sad shadow of what it was just a few years ago.

Most of the cars in "good" shape had been sold because the mayor and inhabitants of the town got tired of people only visiting their village for this salvage yard. Also because the scrappers were not really respecting the environment (well, 50 years ago there wasn't many laws concerning salvage yards).

All the cars were taken out of the wood where there were sitting for decades (sometimes this irremediably damaged them) and they're now sitting outside, waiting to be sold. All of those that they couldn't sell were destroyed.

So, let me first show you some pictures of Kaufdorf before (mind you that these pictures were not taken by me):

Don't worry about this one, it has been saved:

Now a few of my shots:
I mostly took pics of american cars (apparently coming from an old american military base) because they are so rare around here and ... well, I'm an american cars fan.

Keep in mind that these cars stayed decades in a forest, which explains all the rust, molds, leaves and stuff covering them. This is just some pictures of the "end" of Kaufdorf.

Note all the "beheaded" cars. The owners decided to do this on the cars that they could not sell and probably sell or keep the "heads" as decoration, they will be scraped anyway so ...

Last shot from the back. The entrance was on the left and is now barricaded with cars laying on their side. All these cars were taken from the woods on the left. Couldn't really have a look inside since the owners (I guess) and some people with some kind of russian accent were hanging around the entrance. But I guess there is nothing left to see on the inside.

This is how it looked in 1969, made by Auwärter on a T1 chassis:

      And 50 years later:

I has been sold to a german car salesman in 2009, but no one seems to have any more info about its restoration. The chassis is completely eaten out and good luck finding the shaped glass windows. Too bad because a few years ago it still had its windows. Unfortunately, a tree fell on it (I think it was in 2001, during a storm).

Apparently only 5 were made and there's only 2 left in the world with this one.

It was probably one of the most famous cars of Kaufdorf.
