My valet key made a trip through the clothing washing machine and still works perfectly. Thought I would share this information for the surfers, etc. out there.

There is some sort of security transponder in there - I was not sure that it would survive the washing machine...

My regular key fob survived the washing machine too...just had to let it sit out and dry

the other one also went in the pool

Yeah, I dropped my regular key fob in my coffee one morning. I'm a zombie before the caffeine kicks in. Anyway, it still works fine, too.

There is no transponder on valet keys. The older ones were actually plastic.

The transponder you are talking about is for the immobiliser. They do not include it on the valet key so the engine will have limited ability while in use.

I believe that you are wrong in every respect. The valet key operates the car completely normally. In fact, it even has its own "memory" for the climate control settings.

The valet key has an RFID chip just like the regular "fob":

The RFID chip is also encased in glass just like those chips they put into your dogs.

why would you chip your dog? does it make it run faster?

They bark when you hold the unlock + panic button for 3 seconds?
It removes the 20 mph speed limiter?

Also, if they show up at the pound, they can lookup the owner and call them.

      Yup,

I vagged my dog too. I can now open and close the eyes with the fob.

Took awhile to find the diagnostics port tho

      My apologogies to everyone.

I actually opened my valet key, too. Just didn't look hard enough.

Is this a new thing for Audi? What about the plastic valet keys? Do they have them too?

    13. 11-14-2006 10:29 PM #13
The keys are fairly waterproof, but I went into the North Sea with a Skoda Key once, it still worked with the car, but the lock function ceased to work. Lock and panic still worked

Just be careful, I hear VW Keys about $300 or more. I could imagine Audi does something jerky like throw another $100 on the price, just caus

The A3 does not come with a credit card key - other Audis do
