No different than the transition to live broadcasting of HDTV was. When our local Faux channel switched their newscast to HD, there were obvious makeup issues that needed to be ironed out.

As for 5k and 48fps being too much data, did you know they shoot and edit in 5k (some are even moving to 8k)? While it's true they drop it down to 4k for output, I doubt sets look "bad" in working resolution. I'll ask my friend who has done compositing work on a a couple movies you may have heard of (most recent was Thor if I remember right).

I will singlehandidly drag you all into the 21st century of filmmaking! I get that 24fps is "movie magic" but it's time to move forward, or at least dip the toe in the water.

Well the rumor is that there will be a 48fps trailer shown before The Dark Knight Returns. so I guess we will find out then.

My first impression of this = bad idea

Spreading over 2 movies was already a stretch. Jackson didn't even want to direct these movies. Now that he's immersed in that world again, he's going to squeeze a 3rd out of the same appendices that he felt could only justify 2 movies when he started the script 5-6 years ago?

1st movie is in the bag, so we'll see the impact of this decision in the 2nd. They already had to create an inorganic break point, now they need to create 2. These movies better be closer to 2 hours than 3.

I just hope this decision doesn't mess with the flow of the movies and make them drag during the slower/boring parts.

      I agree.

Nothing good will come of this.

Well, that's what "fans" whinged about when it came to LOTR.

Now, he is doing his best to please them... well, those "fans" still ain't happy.

As a big fan of Peter Jackson's work, I say bring it on!

Edit: Looks like they are bringing some stuff from appendices of TLOTR.

That will be saved for the Special Director's Cut Unedited Extended Edition that will be available on three separate DVD/Blu Ray releases spaced out about three months from each other

Yes they are. I am AMPED. You cant be a "fan" of Tolkien and not want to see as much of his writing as possible translated to the big screen by Jackson.

      LOTR was superb.

All three films about the Hobbit will be as well.

      Cant wait!!!

It had 3 lengthy books to pull material from for 3 movies.

The Hobbit has 1 short book to cover 3 movies.

Hoping for the best, but Jackson is far from infallible. Remember, um... everything he's done since LOTR?

I am glad my plasma doesn't have that crap. from what I read a lot of the people that saw the 10 minute footage said it looked pretty bad compared to 24 fps.
You just have to get used to it. Right now your brain has learned that 24 fps = movies and that's why faster rates feel wrong. But once you get used to it, you won't be happy to go back to 24 fps choppyness and bluriness.

I'm not going to get used to it. It really looks like crap. I was at dinner the other day and the restaurant's TV had smooth motion turned on and I almost asked them to fix it. It makes everything look like it was filmed with a camcorder.

Uncalibrated TV in diner with Truemotion turned on playing a TV broadcast != Digital theater natively playing source material filmed at 48fps with RED cameras.

I'm not saying 48fps won't suck, but we simply can't compare to what we've seen on TVs and read online about the 10 minute 48fps demo. Let's all give it the 3 hours in the theater and provide our reviews on 12/14...

      1. There is more than enough additional material in LOTR appendices which covers what has happened in Hobbit.

      2. What about King Kong and The Lovely Bones ? Both are fantastic!

My original post about this was in regards to a 70" LCD calibrated playing a Tron Blu Ray. It still looked awful.

Tron is not a movie, filmed in 48fps. Anything upconverted/upscaled will never look as good as good.

Fact of the matter is Jackson is working with less than 1/3 of the material he was for the first 3 movies, but producing the same amount of content. It's a valid concern, but one I'm hopeful proves to be a non-issue.

Glad you enjoyed them. Very few people did.

A 70" calibrated LCD at a restaurant? I need dining establishments with these A/V standards in my area.
