Not sure if this would help you as I am not familiar with your issues.
But after reading the article, it reminded me of something similiar that happened to me.
When I first got my TDI back in 2003, I developed a clunk/knock in the drivers side that led me to believe it was CV Joint. I bought the inner joint with plans of replacing it. Then it went away for a few days and then it came back.
Then it went away again.
Fast forward to 2010 or so. My outer joint boot tore and was spitting grease all over the suspension and inner fender. At this time I also had a hybrid turbo/exhaust mani that I needed to put on. So I had to pull the axle to make the job easier.
While the axle was pulled I was re-greasing the inner and I noticed the inner CV joint had a small piece of the bearing race broken off of it It was about a half an inch long. I found the piece deep inside the boot. I still had the new inner CV joint that I bought 6 years earlier.
So I imagine that that is where the sporadic clunk came from.
I say get a new axle nut, drop the axle and do an inspection.

Well it started on the way home from dubs on the delaware. We pulled over on the highway thinking it was the axle, tightened the bolts. Sound went away then came back couple miles later. It went away the next day then it came back one night and got really loud, the wheel wobbled and everything. I then took it to a shop and had them Look at the axle and the wheel bearing. They said they drive it and put it up on the lift in gear and didn't find anything wrong with either. I just replaced both axles like 3 mos ago. Got it back from the shop a week ago and haven't heard anything until today. I'm just at a complete loss.

Yea Im not sure Becca, I mean it sound like your cv joint but honestly not sure because if it were that bad the noise wouldnt go away! I dont wanna say just wait and see if it gets worse so u can actually physically see the damage or wear! I don't want u broke down on the side of the rode, try NGPThere usually good with diagnosing problems!

Ok real silly request....the scirocco rusted one of the bolt eyelids on the 3 bolt flange of the toilet bowl down pipe....
So most people just trow these out, if you happen to have one of these going to the scraper in ussable shape could you let me know???
I could use it!
Thanks,
Tony

Have you been able to isolated it to one side?
I know when my issue happened, it felt like the car was going to fall apart.
Where did you buy your axles from? I know that a few replacement axles are Meyle brand and they can be hit or miss as far as quality. (from what I read)
Working on CV joints is a pain in the butt, dealing with the grease and all and dealing with the downtime. Especially without a bench vice or parts washer. When I did mine, I had balls rolling down the driveway into the street, it was not fun or pretty. But it went back together.
My vote is for a bad inner joint. (based purely on my own experience)

I would second that most reman axles are straight junk. They have to be with what I use as cores.![]()

I got new axles not rebuilt, hour them from auto parts international cause my boy works there.. We think it's coming from the drivers side (cause thats the side we can hear it on) but it could be the passenger and it's just ricocheting off that side. It only got loud and sounded serious that one time. It did it again yesterday and we took it to the shop, of course the moment the tech got in to take a ride it wouldn't do it again.. Wtf! Should I just get new axles and just try again??
#39930
Is it just that I'm too low?? Ugh!!! I just wish someone could tell me wth the problem is.

So my expirience is with A1's and vanagons, but I know with the A1's that when replacing axles that the axle nuts need to be torqued before the car hits the ground. not doing that will mess up the races in the wheel bearings, maybe not immidiatly, but for sure eventually.....
It seems that they (the shop) checked your wheel bearings, but anychance that torquing the axles nuts on your ride had to be done in a similar fashion? maybe that would explain intermiting cluncking? Aside from that, rechecking the cv bolts (checked) and the axles again (this would be my bet) maybe the issue.

Tony
