Thanks to Joel I was able to wire up the MFA fairly quick. I've compiled this info to help anyone else who may be interested in this mod.

The hardest part is getting the cluster out of the dash.

    Parts Required

    Connector part number: 000 979 115
    air temp sensor: 171 919 379 A
I picked up a plug for the air temp sensor from a donor A2 GTI harness.

    Wiring Setup
    1. short side #1 on blk plug - reset button - red wire on stalk
    2. long side #2 on blk plug - memory - black wire on stalk
    3. short side #2 on white plug - outside temp gauge.
    4. short side #3 on white plug - mode button - white wire on stalk
    5. brown wire on stalk - ground
    6. long side #2 on white plug went over to the grn/blk on oil temp gauge on the center console. I unplugged from the gauge and the MFA oil temp worked.
    7. a vacuum line on back of cluster goes to intake.

    Install Picts

Black plug, left side of cluster

White plug, right side of cluster

    Completed install with 160 gauge

Hmmm. I've been following this thread for a while, and was particularly interested when I found an MFI cluster at the wrecking yard, but I'm still a bit confused.

I understand the added wires for the stalk and temp sensor, etc, but how does the rest of the cluster integrate with the stock Mk1 dash wiring? Are the black and white connectors the same as the factory wiring with the addition of the stalk/sensor wiring. The images don't seem to show the rest of the dash wiring, and it's been so long since I had my cluster out, I can't remember what it looks like.

Also, 160 MPH is waaaay over the top speed of my crate. Will the stock 0-85 MPH speedo and tach fit this cluster? What about the printed circuit wiring for the 0-85, same? Too many questions?

I have the full Scirocco 16v harness & fuse block installed in my car. This mod will be easiest if you have an A2 or Scirocco II harness installed in your Rabbit. This may also work on Cabriolets with little modification. But I think that the mod can still be performed on a stock Rabbit harness.

It looks like there are 13-14 wires going to the two plugs in the cluster. If you can match up those wires properly and integrate the A2/S2 cluster into your Rabbit, then adding the MFA is simply adding 3 wires from the stalk, a 4th from the oil temp gauge and a 5th wire to the air temp sensor out near the bumper and a ground.

The scirocco plugs are setup for an MFI. The slots are blank. With a few connectors and some wire we fill those slots. The information is already running through the cluster, the MFA stalk just lets you toggle and view that information.

Ah, I knew there had to be a catch. I'd like to lose the huge on-dash tach I'm using now, but doing that would mean taking out the analog clock in the cluster. I like the clock, but could adjust to having a digital clock in the cluster instead.

Reading the A2 Bentley shows that the MFI is supposed to have a MPH readout too. Did you install the speed sensor? Actually, I'd just settle for the clock, since I don't have any oil temp or vacuum to monitor, and the analog speedo is good enough to keep me under the limit. If I need to know my velocity to the tenth of a MPH, I'll just use my GPS.

How do you set the clock? Using the stalk?

Pretty F'n slick, man. I wanna do MFA on my new caddy, guess I'll have to write all this stuff down-JefferyB delivered my 'rocco parts car yesterday, but it ain't got MFA I hope I've still got an MFA wiper stalk. How about a PN# on the correct terminals(please)VW has about ten million diferent ones.
Distantly related Q about the car harness-Are the plugs on the a/c setup the same?My donor car is missing the a/c box,but I ve got several rabbit ones hanging around.
EDIT: OOPS,I missed the part #'s the first time. Sorry,I'm blind.Or I'm not paying attention.

I'm not sure about the A/C box. I used the one off my donor Scirocco. I would think its the same. I used the fresh air vent unit in the cowl from an A1 Jetta and it connected to the top of the Scirocco blower unit just fine.

dang...a two year old post that has pics. Everytime I do archived searches I'm lucky if I get 1 out of 10 post with pics. This was a good write up that I had never seen.

    thanks for the bump

Thanks Rodney - I'm still trying to find another super clean A1 - a Jetta GLI or diesel preferably but a nice GTI would also do the trick.

That one was just your style

The cluster was a '88 16v GTI -- incase you have been waiting since 3/04 for an answer.

    long time no see...

I have a new question. Where are the air temp sensors normally located?

Can that cluster be installed in a A1?

  20. 12-07-2005 02:04 AM #20
which stalks can i use on a 86 cabriolet? the 90(or is it 91)+ guys can use the fat stalks from 88 mk2's and up (I believe).
Just want to get the right stuff before I tackle this.

I never realized this thread was 2 years old

  21. 12-07-2005 08:53 PM #21
Vdubspd: the ambient air tem was located under the battery, w/ the element poking thru a hole into the fender well area, ahead of the driver's side wheel.
edit: I just stuck it thru the turn signal wire hole next to the bumper strut so it sits behind the eurobumper and out in the fresh air, but out of the sunlight

EuroKid and Metsu: I used the cluster from an '89 GLI 16v. It had the fat stalks... two connectors on the bottom of the cluster. one of the connectors interfered somewhat with the sheetmetal support that holds the steering column. A little work w/ a dremel (easy access thru the instrument cluster bezel area...didn't pull the dash ) to clearance the metal and it goes in nicely.

Rumor has it there are SOME clusters (CEonepointfive?? ) that use a SINGLE connector on one end and they MAY not interfere w/ the steering column support. I've never seen one, though.

I've seen them, they do exist! I believe it was in an '89 or '90 Jetta.

All the normal functions of the cluster will work but the outside temp wiring an other oddball theings may not be in the harness. You wouldn't necessarily have anything to hook them up to at first anyway.

The computed functions like gas mileage etc should work right off the bat assuming you remembered to run a vacuum line to the cluster.

So I read that this could work with CIS.. I think that's how I understand it... My question would be... Say I want to do a motor swap in the future... Being that this is Cali, i'd prolly wanna take eeeevvverything with it, so what setups had this thing natively? I've always wanted a dandy little thing like that, so I could show off my awesome mileage XDDD

Thinking about doing this to my 1990 carbed Scirocco, is there any difference doing it to a later car, as you said it might be easier doing it on an A2 or a mk2 Scirocco, maybe ill have the plug for the stalk and all there??

And has anyone any experience of the mpg feature on a carbed car?? i cant find any info anywhere about it!

the mpg feature will work on a carbed car, but it won't be accurate. Not like it's accurate anyway. It just runs off a vacuum line.
