Thread: I got the phone button working

  1. 12-12-2006 06:22 PM #1
I got the phone button working with a bluetooth handsfree kit.

All you will need is a steering wheel interface (CAN bus adapter for phone button) and a Parrot CK3000 Evolution car kit. The steering wheel interface includes everything you will need to install into a non-dynaudio B6, you don't have to cut any wires, the kit is plug & play

    http://www.parrotkits.com/steeringwheel.html

I have the dynaudio system, so I had to run the audio from the car kit into the telephone input on the factory radio. I used the TELEPHONE KIT - standard radio - STEL from Techmark

    http://www.tm-techmark.com/tou...audio

    I hope this helps.

Did you do the install yourself, if so any pictures or write up on how to do it?

How are you finding this kit?

I've installed one of these into a GTI before, and we think it's dogpoo

  5. 12-13-2006 08:56 AM #5
I installed the kit myself. The install was so easy I didn't take any pictures. All you have to do is remove the radio, unplug the wiring harness and plug the harness from the kit into the radio and the car kit, run the h/f microphone, and run a wire to the fuse box for switched 12V.

as far as the Dynaudio goes - I originally installed the kit as described, but the audio was loud and had a loud hiss when using the h/f. I assume it was because the Dynaudio system has an external amplifier and the audio output of the h/f kit was at a higher level than the external amp was expecting. That is why I wired the audio to the telephone input on the radio.

The Parrot CK3000 Evolution kit works good, the audio output is good and I haven't had any complaints about how the microphone sounds. There isn't anything special about the kit, but it does work as advertised.

As much fuss as everybody made about the phone button on the steering wheel not working I thought everybody would be all over this.

  7. 12-13-2006 12:43 PM #7
Pardon my ignorance, but how do you connect it to the steering wheel. I thought the phone button wasn't connected to anything.

The signal for the phone button is the the CAN bus, these wires are in the radio wiring harness.

    I love the idea.

But I paid to have the official VW Motorola solution installed. Kinda hard to tell the missus I want to do it again.

For the OP, is the mic wire long enough to put it in the overhead console?

How is the VW Motorola working for you? I was considering getting it.

I would like to know how do you hear and how good is being heard thru the system by others (noises...)

Yes, the mic wire is long enough to put in the overhead console. That's where I installed mine.

I love it, easy to use, and has more features than I need.

My biggest concern is with the placement of the mic. The dealer installed the mic on the dash, behind the wiper stalk (I couldn't see it when I first got it). It fell off, so I moved it up higher, for a better line of voice.

I don't get many complaints, except when the A/C is on high, it seems to pick up the wind noise from the vents. I also found that if you raise your voice too much, the sound quality actually drops (I guess it clips it).

As far as hearing it through the speakers, no problem at all.

If this really works- this is great. I'm not clear from the posts if it works with the Dynaudio systems or not.
    Long day...

  14. 12-14-2006 08:25 AM #14
What I did to get it to (to my satisfaction) with the Dynaudio system is to wire the audio input from the car kit to the audio input on the VW radio. I used the TELEPHONE KIT - standard radio - STEL from Techmark

Do you think the same steering wheel harness would work with the Motorola Bluetooth unit, or is it specific to the Parrot unit?
I bought the Motorola one expecting to be able to use it with the steering wheel harness mentioned above without reading carefully enough to see that it was meant for the Parrot Evolution kit. But I can return the Moto unit if necessary. It was quite a bit less expensive than the Parrots though.

    Thanks!

Oh, you can be sure of that! I would love to do this install although I'm holding my purse-strings for other mods in motion. I book-marked this link so believe me I appreciate it.

I get completely annoyed at VW for omitting this feature everytime I see the new Altima commercial featuring bluetooth. Anyone else have this reaction?

I too get a sour stomach when I see that Nissan commercial. I was really hoping for the bluetooth interface that was pre-announced for the B6.

Does anything show up on the headunit showing that you are on the phone?

When I bought my car the salesman said VW would have an adapter kit available soon. What "soon" means for VW I can't say.

You watch commercials? TiVo/DVR is the way to go. I don't think I've watched a commercial in a few years with the exception of the Super Bowl and they sucked the last few years.

Well..... after my last post I decided to give my salesman a call to inquire about the Bluetooth Handsfree module/ adapter. The "aftermarket specialist" from my dealer just called me back. He said, "YES", that feature is now available and can be installed for the bargain price of $515 He claims it is a VW product, not someone elses aftermarket product. I'm skeptical. He also said it will interface with steering wheel controls and Dynaudio system. Unfortunately this is not currently in my budget. Will repost when I have install done. Anyone else had this done at their dealer?

Are there any good VW service departments in MD??? Very tough going...

  27. 01-19-2007 08:25 AM #27
I purchased at Fitzgerald in Annapolis. Not exactly thrilled with service dept thus far. But no horror stories either. From what I've read about some dealers, I would say my service has been above average.

I am in the middle of the same installation on my wife's 2006 Passat with Dynaudio Navi. Everything works correctly, except I ran into the same noise issue with the amplified signal going into an amplified system.
I have the STEL cable from Techmark, and it is obvious where it plugs into the HU. I haven't been able to figure out which wires to tap into on the mono plug end of the cable though. I think I have traced it down to the wires that go from the Parrot brain box (mine is blue) to the mute cable, but there are 5 and I haven't found the right two. I do know that the white wire is what amplifies the signal, as when it is disconnected the audio gets much quieter and the noise goes away. However then the volume cannot be adjusted and it is too soft. There are four other wires going to the mute cable: yellow, red, blue, and black. But when any of these is disconnected there is no audio, and disconnecting some of them makes the steering wheel controls non-functional.
Am I in the right place, and if so, which wires should I be tapping into with the STEL cable?

Thanks much, this is driving me nuts!

    -Bryan

I had this kit in my GTI, people complained about not hearing me well. I think it's just my phone (sony ericsson w810i), sold the kit though. Other people in the mkV forum who installed this kit with other phones didn't have problems, there even a video in there of how it works.

  30. 01-22-2007 08:04 AM #30
If I remember correctly, I used the red & white wires at the parrot kit.

I cut the mono plug off of the audio input to the radio and wired the black with white stripe to the red, and the black to the white.

You might want to check with Howard at Parrot Kits before you do it, just to make sure.

OK. Now that my dealer's "aftermarket specialist" completed a "Bluetooth Class", I have additional insight to this install. They are offering to install a Handsfree kit made by Visteon. It looks similar to the Parrot kits and others. I'm told it will interface with the stereo HU but not with the infamous steering wheel button. The Visteon console would be used and the wheel button remains useless. So, I'm not about to lay out $515 for a half a** solution. And the most worrysome aspect to this is, my VW dealer won't actually do the install. They hand it off the their affiliated Mazda dealership. This is where the "high tech work is done", I was told.

Has anyone had any experience with this Visteon product?

Howard also sent me a message with a good photo showing exactly where it goes - must have been the only combination I didn't try, heh!
I haven't had access to the car long enough to take care of it, but I will update with how it works after the fix.

    Thanks guys!

This is definitely not a recommended mounting location for the microphone. Not just for the Motorola IHF1000 kit, but any handsfree system's microphone would be ideally placed on the overhead console.

You want to keep the microphone directed towards the driver, and as far away from noise sources as possible (windshield/wind noise, a-pillar/windnoise, etc.).

That top-of-the-steering-column location is going to introduce all sorts of background noises coming from the dash panel cavity and certainly degrade the handsfree audio (to those you call) to a certain degree.
