Thread: March Dyno day.

  1. 01-23-2007 01:17 AM #1
!New Date! March 17th. Depending on how many cars we have, we may do it in conjunction with the bimmerforums guys. Unless there are objections.

    *EDIT*
Talked to Alex at CarbConn and their AWD dyno is being installed now.

Doesn't matter but I'd shoot for later so people can get stuff together and maybe more people.

Moe and Hil, did you dyno your cars at the last one?

I think I'll probably have to put the GTI on the rollers at least once so I'd go for either but the 24th is preference.

Does anyone know if wheel size and weight makes a huge difference on the dyno for accurate readings? I'm wondering if it would read more at the wheels with 16" steel wheels over 19's?

  8. 01-23-2007 02:01 PM #8
It's all about how quick you can spin the rollers.

Can you notice a difference in acceleration when you switch between the wheels? If so, definitely use the lighter wheels on the dyno.

this for some tuning or just baselines again?

  11. 01-23-2007 02:23 PM #11
the club dyno days don't allow for tuning, it's bascially 3-4 runs to establish a base line.

just got the 16's (Dunlop H rated snow tires) and have yet to unrap them and put them on the car... since I'm not in as much need for grip as drag racing I think they will work just fine. I can tell they are definitely lighter than what's on the car, and they are smaller, so less rotating mass as well... I don't think stock I have enough power or torque to worry about slipping on the rollers with H rated tires, so I think that is how I'll roll.

    Anyone think that is cheating?

Sorry, they require club days to be on Saturdays.

It's hardly cheating. Is it cheating to use a lighter wheel at the track?

Keep in mind with all the dyno's calibrating and configuring, there is still plenty of room for variation. Even if you only run on Dyno Jet XXXs you will still get different numbers from one dyno to another. It's a good idea to run a setup that you can duplicate the next time you go since really you're only getting a relative number for how you improved over the base line run. The numbers themselves have only so much validity on their own, it's the difference between the runs that shows your true improvement. It also is a good idea to keep using the same dyno for reference.

  18. 01-23-2007 03:02 PM #18
i would say roll with what you're gonna roll with on the street? that way you know your aprox. whp with the setup that you will most often use.

I didn't dyno cause I couldn't figure out my fueling problem. I would dyno with your 16"s mainly cause of the rolling diameter of your 19" tires is taller, but it probably won't make much difference.

I'm down. I need to Dyno the 20th again before the turbo goes on. (down the road a little)

But what does that really tell you? You can dyno 200whp on a Dyno Jet and then do 160whp on a Mustang. So is your car slower after the Mustang dyno run? no.

It's the difference in runs after modifications that you're really after doing dyno testing. So as long as you're consistant with your car setup between dyno runs, it doesn't matter what you run for wheels was my point.

Well the plan was to roll these in the winter and the 19's in the summer... 6 & 6... so that would be a toss up then.

Then I'll just roll down with whatever I have on my car that day then... I was going to swap them out this weekend anyways.

Good news is, this has been the only dyno I've ever used with any of my cars... so at least it's good for comparision that way.

I just installed my 2.9l manifold last weekend so either will work for me.

I voted for the later one, just in case I have time to get more things on.

This is why I'm going back to them. So that I have somewhat accurate comparisons of before and after mods. I also like the guys at Carb Conn. Very friendly and helpful.

I imagine it'll be the same price as last time. $81.60 tax included.

GTech won't give you A/F ratios though....

kind of excited... just got these to put on the car:

But it'll be a while to get them on... I need new injector seats for the manifold and I gotta do a timing belt soon...more like right now..
