Thread: Power to Manual Steering - what parts?

  1. 01-30-2007 01:18 AM #1
I'm trying to convert my '87 Cabriolet to manual steering. I swapped the steering racks, but the universal joint shaft now misses the steering column by about 2".

What parts do I need to scrounge/order? I see lots of posts about how easy it is to change to manual steering but no details.

BTW - power steering isn't an option now. The car has been converted to electric and I can't get anyone to make a power steering hose that will connect to a Toyota MR2 EHPS pump I also don't have enough power on tap to run the pump from the 12V system.

Hope you swapped the tie rods too, they are different between manual and power.

Part numbers from ETKA as follows,
    for '87
    shaft for manual, 171 419 951 C
    shaft for power, 175 422 951 A
shaft for power with air bag, 155 419 947

I have no idea why an air bag shaft was included in '87 listings, but it was.
I checked a few other possibilities, Scirocco shafts are not an option, different part numbers.
Rabbit numbers for U.S. produced cars are identical to those for Cabriolets, Plenty of those in CA junkyards, same in OR?
