    1. 02-22-2007 01:36 PM #1
i thought it would be good to start a thread about weekly sketches, art, paintings, graphics etc. the subject matter can be whatever you want. this is a good thing so people can share their work and motivate each other with comments, criticism etc. lets begin

    2. 02-22-2007 01:37 PM #2

yeah, i had the red mk2 (the red dragon, hence my username reddragongti). i'm on my 4th car since then (a mk1 gti and 3 bmws...). seems like i've lived almost a whole lifetime since then (and even could've/should've died once... ).

anyway, let's see some sketches... here's one of mine from a couple months ago--

took forever since i don't have a tablet, just pen sketch rendered w/ a mouse....

      awesome sketch joel
the subtlety is real well executed in the shadows and reflections well done!!!

also you captured the 911 proportions,
which in my opinion is one of the toughest to get!

next week i am going try some color in the sketch

Here's my quick attempt at a less hardcore, more daily driver version at least.

Not too happy with the shading and wheels, but I need some sleep. I'll probably redo it tomorrow.

Start sketching shapes. Carry a sketchbook with you. Start playing with warm grey's/cool greys and a ball point pen. Don't use pencil. Don't play with a tablet until you can render by hand well enough to go to electronic. Don't get dependent on sketchbook pro/illustrator. paper is your friend.

Oh, last suggestion, find one type of paper and keep using that paper. learn how manipulate the paper and ink to do what you want. Personally, i use layout bond or arjo wiggins marker paper.

That's all I can help with. I still haven't gotten a grasp on the tablet, gotta start using it again. I guess I like prismacolors and ball point more than I like my wacom.

Forgot one thing, observe everything. Observe how different materials reflect light, whether it's a glass sitting on the table or a car and it's body lines.

ok, this isn't so much of a sketch as much as it is a full blown canson rendering, but it's all i've got online

      Nice work everyone.
reddragongti, I feel your pain of rendering with a mouse.
I did this for someone on another forum.
He wanted a sketch for a drift car project sponsorship proposal.

      goofydoug-- i like.

Reflex5.5-- i'm not a rendering pro but i'll share some things i've learned: use a harder brush w/ lower opacity for some parts so it's not so soft/fuzzy. and use multiple layers (see what happens when you set some to 'multiply') to build up value and to more easily render certain areas (highlights, hard reflections, etc)

'93 Passat GLX-- thanks, i do what i can but i'm not at the level i want to be. i used photoshop.

TickTack-- black_sheep is right, learn by hand first; it's all practice and observation. although i wouldn't stay away from pencil completely, it can be a good tool if you use it right (but i'd recommend prismacolor instead of a regular #2)

username-- andy how's everything been in detroit? nice old-school style, was that from back in the day at school?

yurikaze-- the world-famous yuri. that's all that needs to be said. somehow everyone either knows you or knows someone who knows you. anyway, we need to get down to business one of these sketchfests instead of just playing mario kart or watching movies, are we sketchfesting in candyland this sunday?

junior year car as machine project...which puts it about spring 2001. marker, gouche (how the hell do you spell that), pencil, and pastel with just a touch of airbrush and photoshop to make things pop.

      things are good!

Thanks. What design work has you in CA? Your style is unique, very straightforward with an almost comic book quality to it. And I mean that in a good way, as in "Superman", not "Mickey Mouse" Very cool! Thought your name was familiar as I remember seeing your Michelin designs Post some more if you're willing.

'01 grad, year before username. Only did this sketch of the bike and the rest is being thought out in Alias. So much for the "process". Whoops.

Currently at Cadence Innovation in Troy.

goofydug- that looks interesting. What were you illustrating?

andy, good to hear things are good.

saaboo, i'm at a company called MÖZ Wheels (pronounced like moe's) in long beach designing aftermarket wheels. honestly not what i expected to be doing, but it's been working out well and i'm a lot happier than if i would've tried to get an oem car job. too many tools in the car industry, too many people love themselves a little too much... but that's a whole rant that i'm not going to get into. glad to hear you were at ccs in 01, i think it was a lot better school back then (i graduated in 05, so i was right in the middle of the school's steep decline in my opinion... but that's also a whole rant i'm not going to get into).

as for the comic book style, that comes from my 9 months i spent at little tikes (toy company) doing toy vehicles. 3 months after junior year and 6 months after graduating. that first summer actually made up my mind that i didn't want an oem job, it was actually fun to go in to work and the designers were genuinely nice people.

anyway, to keep the sketches coming, here's one i did at work sometime last year:
