the rack and tie rods were never replaced during my 90,000 mile ownership of the car but never gave me problems. tie rod ends aren't too old.
what should that cost? i'll look around for used prices and be less than them.

control arms were already used in another car.

Ok, so for the past couple months I've been using Carl's welder and Rudy's grinder. First off I'm going to say thanks to both of them because I said I wouldn't borrow their things that long......
So I've been working on a secret project, secret for the most part. It a mid 90's probably Murray riding lawn mower. It started out with an 18hp motor. When I picked it up it had broken the rod and busted a hole in the block, obviously catastrophic failure. I rescued it, from lawns at least .

The first thing I did was start tearing it down. It was easy. I then started work on the front end. I knew I was going to need a bit more room and that it had to be much lower than stock ride height, of course lower, is there any other way? I took off the stock steering bar and simply welded it to the top of the frame.

I didn't have much of an idea as to what was going to work for the axle, but I knew the height it needed to be.

Onto the fun. I wanted to make something fun. I did some motor hunting and thinking. I decided on an old air cooled 2 stroke. But I ended up finding a complete 1983 yz250. Water cooled 250 2 stroke. I was a little nervous about the water cooled part, I wanted this to be super simple. Oh well, the price was wayyyyy right. So I bought it. The power valve was busted and the cylinder was **** along with the piston. Bored to the max, like 4mm over stock! I ended up finding a good jug on ebay and bought it. I also didn't want a left exit exhaust like the bike had stock. Dumb idea if I ever changed the motor because all new ones are right exit. So I did some test fitting and it seemed as though it would be a tight fit for a right side pipe. Eh, I found a super cheap Bills Pipe from a 97 cr250, done deal there. All I had to do was cut the flange off and it slid into the jug, not sealing well at all, but it works for now.

Ah the shifter. I wasn't sure what was going to happen with this quite yet. I realized that a sick shifter would be a lever, and what better to use than the deck lid lever! Since this project was built on the cheap, this was perfect. I wanted to use the thumb thingy for the clutch, but then realized the clutch lever mounted perfectly onto the deck lid lever. Awesome! I bent the stock shifter out and bolted a connecting rod to the bottom of the new shifting lever. It works, thats it. I plan on making something better, along with half of the rest of the mower next spring. I just wanted to ride it like asap.
From here I did the axle. Decided on a 42in axle with 8x8in trailer wheels on hubs. It went on easy enough. Just had to weld the bearings on the frame for it.

Then came the exhaust. I knew I was going to use the new pipe, and that I was going to use the DG silencer that came on the yz. That meant I needed to make a mid pipe that allowed the silencer to exit out the back and away from my legs. I used some small 2in exhaust pipe, cut sections out of it and bent it, and welded it together. It was relatively easy, and not the best way to do it, it works. Yeah the welds are sucky, bla bla. Tell me something I don't know.

The sprocket setup is kind of funky. The dirt bike sprocket I used was bigger than the axle hub adaptor, so I made a ring that they both bolted too. It works well. No pics. The brake is LARGE lol. I used a two piston caliper off a 00's Ninja ZX11. It is strong! I mated that to a big rotor off a heavy cruiser bike, Valkarie or something. The sizes of the rotor and the adapter were unsuitable for a ring to be made for them. So out came the welder and they are now together forever! I cut the stock mount from the bike so that the master cylinder and brake pedal could stay together. I then welded a large piece of angle iron so that I could bolt it on. And I cut a hole for the pedal. Easy stuff. No pics specifically yet.
The gas tank is a VW coolant tank . It was filthy, now my gas is filthy, I knew what I was getting into with it. I've got a fuel filter on there. No pics, but it worked perfect for what I needed. Something small that would be easily fitted under the hood. No pics specifically yet.

I decided I didn't want to spend money quite yet on a piston for my new cylinder, since I had a piston and cylinder that were already shot, I figured I'd give them a second chance at life. The power valve exploded into the jug when the last person had it, scarring the sleeve, top of the piston and the head. I had very little hopes for it. Compression test was good though, 125psi! A little low but plenty for it to run. Sweet! I decided to fire it up. Added gas, ewww, I saw all the nastys in the fuel filter. Didn't have much hope again. A few kicks later it fired up! HAHA! I couldn't ride it yet because the chain didn't have a tensioner.

Onto the tensioner. I said screw it, I want to try it. I put the chain on and left it loose. It would be enough to just try it. I spent a couple hours getting everything ready for it. So I got it going again, hoped on and went down the drive way. Effening awesome. The chain obviously wasn't going to work like it was, it was slapping and making all sorts of noise. So the only thing I could think of was c-clamping some sort of chain guide on. Which I did, it works as a very temporary solution. I wont be riding it more than just trying it with it like this. Success! My first little baby ride!
I'm so stoked. Its scary fast. I will be updating this with pics illustrating the parts that I made and/or made work.
Here are a couple vids taken from an iphone 3Gs. It has an awesome recorder!

I'm stoked at hell for this. Its actually scary fast, I love going fast on things, but I'm scared of this so far.

      Help!
I need someone with a jack and one of these wrenches or equivalent:

Can I come over to someone's house please? I need to quickly change my outer wheel bearing of my rear wheel.
Ryan said he might be able to help me out tonight, but I'd like to get it out of the way this afternoon, if someone is available let me know, thanks!

i would and i have that day off.
also, i need to get my fricken jetta out of my garage and thrown away so i may need help lifting the shell onto a trailer or some advice on how i could maneuver a mostly empty shell with possibly only rear wheels on it out, onto a trailer or whatever.

i didn't see much of a response earlier so i have since then made plans, sorry guys.
I do have the following saturday off though if that works for anyone else. I mentioned it to a eurowerks member Dave with the blue viggen and i'll see what he thinks about joining us. He said he noticed a few other VWs around school so maybe we'll get some more help.
