What's wrong with the car again? Like, is it something that, if you didn't care about looks, could be made drivable?

the only thing i could think of is the crank....and i've got one already

why don't you fix it, and drive it? or sell it?

  5. 11-16-2008 11:47 AM #2770
    falling off rust...
    200000 miles....
    leaks coolant like a faucet...
    blown headgasket...

Drove real nice, besides adding a gallon and half of water.
    Nice interior
    gls alloy wheels

Not worth fixing. I got if for $150. Has lots of new parts.

i'd say keep the motor/tranny and interior bits that are sellable.

axles, suspension, i'm sure people need this stuff. i'd take the bumpers if no one wants them.

bumpers are descent, they are yours. Axles are a pain, i am just going to chop them to get the tranny out.

carl it takes like 10 minutes to disconnect the axles from the tranny.

and i'm sure someone will need the axles at some point. you get to make money.

Too late, I already chopped the passenger drive axle. We are talking about the same axles right? It takes me like and hour to get both sides off the tranny when in the car. triple-squares are a pain in the ass... all packed with dirt and crud. Then the wheels turn when you try to turn the bolts out... yada yada yada... Then when you are under the car the engine falls down on you and kills ya... Thats the worse part... is getting killed. I hate that.

oh, also keep the spindles and calipers and carriers and hubs and the brake master cyl.

the axle nuts are gonna be waaaay tough to remove now that the axles are cut off. you seriously cut the axles in 2? with like a sawzall? did you remove the nuts first?

thank you for the bumpers too.

    -Pete

  11. 11-16-2008 06:51 PM #2776
I cut the long axle in half. Thats the one that gets in the way the most. Axle nuts come right off with the air gun. The other axle is still good. and all cv joints are good. Yeah, I was thinking about grabbing the calipers. carriers probably not. If you want them, the car is free for the pickens. The goal is to clean this up asap.

i'm just thinking someone would probably like girling 54s and the appropriate hardware on a mk2 around here. i guess that would include me if i get another car. I'll come and take the crap apart if you're just giving it away.

i thought you were more looking for suggestions for what to take off and sell.

    -Pete

  14. 11-17-2008 10:55 AM #2779
Ive tried saving axles in the past. They take up too much room and are dirty. Basically, I am looking to keep the parts that are small but spendy. Axles are large and cheap, and if I ever had to relpace one I would rather buy it new. Things like ignition coils on the other hand, well I wish I had 50 of them in the shed. (and window regulators, definitely don't want to buy them new.)
I am home from work today, so that will give me time to grab some more stuff.

From what it sounded like over the phone, I'll bet the scirocco in Hill City would be a better buy. (just because of who owned it)

  19. 11-19-2008 11:29 AM #2784
well, i guess that is the next one to check out! the guy in minneapolis LIED

he said that it was in great shape, only the fender was slightly bent, and the dash and wheels were in good shape.

WHAT I SAW-every panel on the car was bent/dented, rust was somewhat minimal. interior was completely shot, looked like an elephant sat on the corners of the seats, someone had drilled something into the dash, the carpet was shot, the sunroof was duct taped down, it was a serious smokers car who missed the ashtray a good portion of the time.

I took a good 5-10 seconds before i turned and left because i was so pissed off!
do not waste your time looking at this pile!

    -selling your car anytime carl?

^^^ I've been burned like that a few times. Just from talking to the guy I knew he wasn't much a vw fan and not to expect much. He just happened to have a scirocco. Usually those kind of situations turn out with the cars being huge piles of crap. (remember the cabriolet Pete?) Not the case with the scirocco in Hill City. They love them and take awesome care of their cars.

you know i'd love to tell him that....but there is that one problem of me not going into work at this moment. he's fun to work with, we through stuff back and forth all day, haha. i played hockey with him last night, and if he comes on sunday then too. so i may see him then. crazy though. Its weird because a lot more people work in the trades than i thought. Maybe I just wasn't so keen on knowing it.

    I'll call 4am morning...

Pete I'm looking for another lens, I just got a 50mm f1.8 for portrait work, I want something for more car/landscape shots. What are you shooting for this stuff?

I'm thinking of a 10-20 or something like that...

going back and looking, the majority of the car stuff ends up being with the sigma 10-20. the canon 10-22 will give similar results but cost a bit more.

otherwise i use primes for everything else.

    85mm f/1.8 here

oh, and the exif data is viewable on all my flickr photos so if there's one that you want to know about, look there for what lens was used. some flickr users block that stuff, but tons leave it in.
