ya that makes sense, sounds pretty typical, im just unfamiliar with this kind of stuff and wasnt sure if it is applied like spray paint or if it bonded differently to the plastic, thanks!

It's probably too early to ask; a few coats of clear after this should protect the job nicely though. That's what I would do anyway.

well i just tinted the tails on my jetta with this DIY and let me just say they turned out GREAT! ill post pics as soon as i get around to taking them. you guys were right, taping off perfect circles was really easy and didnt take too long. the only thing im concerned about is i might want to go a little darker and ill have to order another can and retape all over again. the stock jetta tails look so much more aggressive and work well with the blacked out grille and tinted windows i have. sorry ill post the pics and then get into it more...in the meantime thanks for a great DIY!

I just used the same can as the OP to tint my mirror signals and they came out great.

It's nice that the clear is mixed in with the spray. It doesn't run much, if at all, but it does along the curves(gravity FTW).

The spray comes out liberally so I think I have enough for one coat on the tails. I'm going to try and tackle it this weekend, but I might spray the whole thing rather than R32'n it.

With the amount of effort it took you to mask the car, you could have simply removed the tails. Other than that, not too shabby.

post some pics of this on a jetta i know someone has it done....also how are they holding up i would assume u would need to sand it down a lil to get it to grip on but i could be wrong... and do u need a clear coat since it in the paint??

  16. 04-11-2007 08:58 PM #86
sorry i havent been able to get my pics of my jetta tails yet, my camera was broken and once i got it fixed its been raining and now even snowing for the past few days. even in this weather the finish has held up just fine though. i didnt put a clear coat over them because im still thinking of going a bit darker, which means i basically have to retape everything and do it all over again. but even without a clear coat they look pretty good. once again, sorry i dont have pics yet ill get them asap.

Why didn't you just take the tail lights out instead of masking off the car? Did you want to do a bunch of unnessasary bs? Takes 1 minutes to pull them out? How long did it take you to mask of the rear and still risk overspray?

I did my tails/mirror signals with the same spray linked on the second page.

It was raining the whole week after I installed them and they've held up quite nicely. No marring or flaking or peeling of any sort.

I ran out of spray because I was messing around too much at first so I ordered another can and will be doing another coat to the tails.

I can post pictures up in a couple hours, but they won't look much different than the stock tails. They just stand out a bit more than the stock red, but they're nowhere near as deep yet as the R32 tails.

Here are the tails...I'm going to take them off and do them a tad darker than they are now.

In the sun, they're still stock looking just deeper so it still stands out.
