Good to know. Why are you yelling?

Five Guys just opened here. My parents have been twice and said both times that the people haven't given as many fries as Five Guys is used to. I think I might go after work today.

Best burger ever was one that we used to have on the menu at my old spot when I was a Chef in VA. We used to get our burger meat from these guys. http://www.gryffonsaerie.com/ . Havent found a burger that could touch it or even come close to it.(meat flavor wise).
    Med rare FTW!

Grew up in the East Bay and don't understand the in n out fuss. It's mediocre at best. Guess you have to have grown up in South Cali in the white trash suburbs to appreciate it.

I finally went to Five Guys a couple weeks ago.

It really wasn't that great -- a greasy burger than dissolved the bun. Such a mess, and not much taste. The seasoned fries weren't that memorable either. I guess the only thing I liked was the iced tea.

(And, no, I'm not an In-n-Out fanboi either)

Overall, I give the experience a "meh".

it really is a horrible thing that some of you aren't getting the real 5 guys experience with sub par food. when they are on, it is untouchable in the fast food world.

today I got everything on it.

    double meat
    double cheese
    lettuce
    tomato
    jalapeno
    mayo
    ketchup
    mustard
    pickles
    relish
    grilled mushrooms
    grilled onions

While I will admit that the burgers aren't the most amazing thing ever, I will say they are a pretty solid tasting burger. But what makes me fiend for five guys is the cajun fries

Its more like directly across from Potbelly's. 11th basically dead ends into 5 guys. I live on 11th, not even a two minute walk to 5 guys..and I pass it everyday walking to class/work/gym. Its always tempting...though not so much lately cause the last time I ate it was when I was drunk then I proceeded to throw it up..ugh. Haven't had it since then.

They are smart because there is no other burger specific place on campus..we have everything else..gyro's/greek food, pizza, subs, mexican, chinese..etc..but no burger place besides Wendy's and McD's. And, they are also smart because their hours cater to OSU students for sure..open til 3AM on thurs-saturday nights..and since they are right in the Gateway across from the bars, all that bar traffic from when it lets out at 2-2:30 AM will funnel right to them.

Went to Harvey's in Montreal. Worst burger I have had. This includes White Castle. It had the consistency of Salisbury steak. I actually had to throw it away. Not the actual burger I had, but representative..

I haven't found any chain that can remotely compare to a homemade burger.

Here's a representative sample we made a couple months ago:

What differentiates your ability to make a burger at home versus what any good restaurant will create?

Also, what is the point of making your burger that tall? Can you unhinge your jaw? A good burger should allow you to fit the entire thing in your mouth to get all the flavors. You've got way to much crap stacked on there. Salad belongs on a plate, not on a burger.

people always say this, but I seriously doubt anyone is using the variety/grind of the premium burger places. Very few supermarkets use good cuts to make burger meat.

^I'm sure that is tasty beef, but in all honesty, why did you make it so thick? Unless you are Mr. ED, you'll never fit that in your mouth. And I agree with the above poster: way too much lettuce and one slice of tomato would suffice.

Although, I give you props for making a tasty looking burger.

(yes...this whole post is a that's what she said)

if there is one thing that really pisses me off when i go to a resuraunt it is when they serve me food i can not physically eat. tall burgers / sandwiches are the worst

  20. 07-10-2009 10:16 AM #162
That burger was too thick (my wife formed it), but it was flavorful. The point is more that, if you're comparing what you can do at home easily to what you can purchase at the "premium" fast food burger joints like 5 Guys, Fuddruckers, and In-n-Out, you can almost always do a better job yourself with higher quality ingredients. I don't particularly care what toppings other people put on their burgers -- the takeaway is that if you supply them yourself they're going to be better than if you buy your burger from a restaurant.

This is 180 degrees from my assessment of homemade versus a proper brick oven pizza, btw, and I have had some excellent restaurant burgers, but not at fast food places.

not chains but there are def some fast food places that have better burgers than home made

WTF? Hang on, there could be a slight truth in that statement. If you're one of those people that can burn water, anything would taste better than home made.

Are you saying 5 Guys is a "premium" restaurant?

Just had my very first one. A double cheese burger lettuce tom onion. I thought it was very well crafted and the juices were great. However it was not as good as in n out and the fries are not even close although I do like the extra scoop on top of the bag. That was major win! Over all its very good and a close second to INO
