Thread: Complete Install Instructions: OEM Blue Alarm light on driver and passenger side doors (pics)

  1. 04-11-2002 04:19 PM #1
    Intro:

First of all I got LED's and the housings from BoneKrusher, so if you want info on how to get them email him. This mod took about 2 hours to do, and it was well worth it. It gives your passenger door a little bit of an Audi feel to it. It wasnt a very difficult job to do, but it also wasnt a breeze.

    What you need:

    -2 LED's with housings
    -Torx T20 bit
    -Philips Screwdriver
    -10ft Speaker Wire
    -Bently Manual
    -Patience
Here is what you get when you order the housings:

    Installation Instructions:

    1. Take apart the driver's side door.
    Roger Moores assembly overview:

There are 3 screws on the bottom, on the inner side, and two inside of the switches. To take out the switches you remove the inner door handle trim piece, pull up on control assembly and lift off, disconnect the window switches, remove the window switches from the handle cover (from Roger Moores site). There you will see the screws. Disconnect all wires from the door panel and put the door panel to the side.

    2. Pop off the OEM housing from the door.

    3. Cut the OEM wire, about an inch from the housing.

    4. Solder on the new housing to the OEM wire.

Use electical tape and tape down the soldering job.

    5. Unclip the OEM plug and stick the striped speaker wire into it along with the OEM wire.

    6. Remove one side of the black rubber hose and run the wire through the door for about a foot.

    7. Remove the fuse panel(the whole side is held on by 3 clips, just tug on the panel and it will pop off), the panel under the steering column(a couple screws underneath).

    8. Also remove the panel that is farther underneath the steering clumn, the dead pedal, hood release, and the panel behind the hood release.

    9. Now you can feel the other side of the hole that you will run the wire through. Push the wire through the rubber tube and inside of the hole on the metal, and continuing pulling all the wire through.

    10. Tuck the wire behind the petals and push the wire through a small hole next to the gas pedal, have someone on the other side to pull it.

    11. tuck the wire under the glove box and remove the other side panel.

    12. Remove the passenger side door and remove the OEM lock housing.

    13. Here is where it gets a bit tricky. I pushed the wire through the hole inside of the car and into the rubber hose. this is as far as i was able to push it. so i did the same that i did with driver's side door and i pushed a spare piece of wire from the door and through the hose. Then i taped the spare wire to the wire were using and pulled the whole thing out.

here you can see where i taped it to pull it through. The taped section is right underneath the rubber hose.

    14. Now that you have the other end of the wire on the passenger side door, just attach the second housing to wire, then to the door.

    15. Test it out before you put anything back! The alarm will arm with all the switches removed. If the driver's side works and the passenger doesnt, you may have put the LED on backwards, switch the positve/negative terminals and try again.

    16. After you got it working put everything back the way you found it, and enjoy your cool mod.

Yes they do blink simoultaneously, in case your wondering.
I hope this helps everyone through this procedure. Email, or IM me if you have any questions.
Also if anyone wants to add this to one of their do it yourself sites (like http://www.mkivresource.com) feel free to do so.

I love the walkthrough, its very informative and well written.

One quick question, is step 5 is the OEM plug located in the door or somewhere under the dash? Thanks in advance.

Do you get oem replacement housings or are do they look different? Or maybe I'm not understanding. Maybe we use the existing housings? Please clarify. I love it.

Maybe I'm missing something here, why do you have to run another wire to the passenger side? It's already wired to the stock harness, right?
Could you clue me in here?

    Thanks

The wire to the passenger side is so there's a blue light on the passenger side. Your stock passenger side door doesn't have an alarm light. So he's doing two things here: replacing the driver's side red light with a blue light, then running a wire from that light to the passenger side, then adding a blue light to the passenger side.

My bad, believe it or not, I've never even noticed.

    Thanks

The passenger side does not have a light stock so it seems the easiest way to get one over there is to attache it to the drivers side light....

Did you just buy another driver's side door led holder? Are they symmetrical so that they both look like they are supposed to be there? Very nice job!!

thank you for the kind words, BoneKrusher your tips helped out alot. I already knew how to take apart all the panels so it wasnt too hard for me.

this is located inside the door. When you take the door panel off and you unplug all the wires you will see it there.

Yes they are, they look completly OEM

Uhh, I think they only come out while the alarm is armed. That's why they're "alarm lights". It's just like the red light in you driver's side door normally. It's only on when the alarm is.

  24. 04-12-2002 09:06 AM #24
those lights only come on when the alarm is armed.. so if you pass a cop with them on I'd be worried...

how do the lights stay in place? Do you glue them?? Can I put this on my website??

    Very impressive!!

  28. 04-12-2002 09:23 AM #28
One thing I didn't compeltely get though: does the wire end up just dangling there behind the gas/brake pedals?

  29. 04-12-2002 09:45 AM #29
    first off...good job.

second though couldn't you just make a new wiring harness to do this rather than cut your factory one? Doesn't this kind of DIY permanent modification somewhat reduce resell as well as bring up issues with warranty items. Especially because it is not easily reversible without "damaging" the existing stock components or replacing them and second if there is a wiring problem you could be blamed for it because you made modifications to the wiring.....

    Just a thought

AWESOME!! That's one of the best procedural write-ups I have ever seen. You guys with websites should ask him for the "rights" to the pictures and stuff. That would be a good one to have archived like the sunglass holder and armrest replacement write-ups.

That looks very professional - good job!

  32. 04-12-2002 10:14 AM #32
gorilla, wire 'rests' in the driver side under dash, there's a platform there.

quickstick, this is easily reversible. the only wires you really get into is the driver side OEM LED, which one may easily reattach and plug back into the harness. No harness is removed or altered.

exactly they only go on when the alarm is armed.

as far how they stay in place, IM BoneKrusher and he will give you the specs on the lights. And of course you can put this on your site, feel free to do so.

    quote:

yes your right, i could have, but i didnt feel like doing that at the time. Whenever i sell my car, i will just take out the blue LED harness, and reattach
the OEM red harness by soldering it on, then just put a little electrical tape, and noone would know unless you really inspect it.

when you take the two panels off under the steering column you will find a few places that you can attach the wire to. You can even use zip ties, and tie to one of the hundred plastic pieces down there.
