The first design of something groundbreaking is often lacking. I'm just thankful that Apple has put this together so that Samsung can improve upon it by the time I need a new phone.

Most of the good press I read is about the software and its "elegance". Not so much the basics, like navigation, but how the GUI looks and feels.I think an iPhone is neat. It's likely a good tie-in to the Apple family of products, specifically iTunes. But this seems to go back to the "shadows under the icons" kind of thing, where a fancy looking OS is just that: fancy looking. Tell me the iPhone does tons of things that other devices don't do, then tell me the $500+ price is accurate for those features. Gets subjective but I still don't need fading in menu's and icons on a little wide-screen LCD to justify such a price tag. I'm always waiting for Apple to show me something more than just aesthetic.
All of that said Apple is proving itself to be the little engine that could. It's ironic how little of the market they own (music market, not just computers) yet how indestructible that market share is. In our lifetime they may never be as big as Sony/MS/etc. for the various electronics/software fields, but they own the hearts and subsequently wallets of many a geeks worldwide.Luckily, I'm heartless so it's not an issue for me.

It's not the quantity or look of the features, it's the quality. The iPhone is a "smartphone" that's easy to use. It lacks some features found on other phones, but the features it does have are extremely easy to use.

I work in the General Motors Building... the tall white building right behind the Apple Store on 5th Avenue (you may have seen it in all the interviews with people on line). The first guy on line has been sitting out there since Monday - he's crazy.
Line was kinda short (only ~10 people) until last night and then things exploded.
Last I checked (~2:30EST this afternoon), the line was completely around the block with a number of folks who aren't even going to buy an iPhone!! They just want to sell their place in line! One guy had a sign with his "space" for sale for $400!!

- MattyHah... I just saw that. They interviewed one clown and asked him what he had to say to those who thought it was silly to wait in line for this. His response?
Go to hell or get in line.
Yeah, buddy. Joke's on you.

I'm sure the people in line behind them are really worried.Chances are they don't even have the money to purchase one if they're pulling this crap.

I have to admit that if I was currently employed at a real job, I might have been tempted to pick one up mainly because you can actually surf the "real" internet. To bad you only get like 2-4 times the speed of 56k modem and it doesn't have flash support.

Picked up mine 30 mintues ago(8gb). Activating now....

These FAQ's are fascinating:Q. Is iPhone eligible for Wireless Phone Insurance?
A. No. iPhone is ineligible for the Wireless Phone Insurance program offered to AT&T customers. iPhone is covered by the Apple Warranty. If you have Wireless Phone Insurance from AT&T, it will be removed from your line of service.
and
Q. Do I need to switch to a different rate plan if I upgrade to iPhone?
A. If you’re an existing AT&T (formerly Cingular) wireless customer, you just need to add an iPhone Data Plan. (This may replace your current data plan. Your voice plan will stay the same) The iPhone Data Plan gives you Visual Voicemail, as well as Unlimited Data—includes both email and web—and texting, all for as little as $20. You'll add an iPhone Data Plan and sign a new 2-year service contract during the activation process. Discount eligibility for other devices will continue from the time of your most recent contract.
Wonder why all the "special" treatment? Special data plan is required?

I don't think I have.
I know it's taken a beating in the media about the data speed, but to be honest, besides streaming youtube the speeds are acceptable for browsing etc. People are going to be blown away

There's a name for that, I think...yes, it's called trolling.

I've been telling myself it's too expensive, not fast enough, not the right features, too fragile, I don't need a new cellphone yet, etc...But I stopped by my local store after work around 8pm and checked it out.
The phone is BEAUTIFUL and it's worth every penny. If they weren't sold out I have one here with me at home right now.
It's a beautiful design and the engineering is very forward thinking.
I can only imagine all the tweaking and applications that will be coming for it very soon....
Only thing I wish it came with is a universal dock insert so I could use the existing dock I have (I know it comes with it's own special dock)...

I literally got the LAST ONE from my local Cingular store. Only had to wait in line a few minutes. Maybe I'll regret getting the 4GB one but I told myself several months ago $500 was my absolute limit on this product. The Burlington, MA Apple store seemed to have no shortage of them as of 730PM with absolutely no line.Just tried activating but apparently Apple is "processing" my activation and I will be emailed when its activated. Guess they are somewhat overloaded with activations??? Guess I'm waiting a bit longer.

I'm hearing that the delays are on ATT's side, not Apple's.
#174
Apparently ATT caught up some on activations and a lot of iPhones were activated overnight.
