nobody should be surprised about being throttled on "unlimited" data plans.

AT&T clearly has their own definition of unlimited. last month, I hit more than 3GBs on my iPhone 4. I got the text saying that if it happens in the next month, they'd throttle my data. and within 5 days of having my iPhone 5, I get another message stating I was over the 5GB soft cap of my LTE plan. I'm definitely feeling the slowdown right now.

I'm having a problem with my iPhone 4, tried going to the telus store where I got it, they had no idea, tried taking it to a guy that does cell phone repairs (a sign in the window claimed he "specializes" in iphone repairs), and no one has ever heard of the phone acting like this.
So here it is, its doing a few strange things. First, I noticed when I go into my contacts, and go into an individual contact, the "edit" button that should be in the top right corner is no longer there. So I cannot edit contact information. As a result, I have multiple contacts in there for quite a few people, as they have changed phone numbers, email addresses, etc. I don't know exactly when this happened, but I first noticed it sometime after I had updated to ios5. I am currently running ios6.
Another strange thing, is in the "Mail, Contacts, Calendars" menu, under "My Info", it has the contact for some random people in my phone. I tried to switch it back to my name, but when I did that, it wouldn't display ANY of my contacts. They all disappeared. When I switched back "My Info" to my name, all of the sudden they all came back.
Another thing is the bluetooth appears to not be working anymore either. It was working fine, I had it paired with the stereo in my truck as well as a motorolla roadster in my work vehicle until a few weeks ago when although it said it was paired, wouldn't work.
Does anyone have any idea what might be going on with it? Its out of warranty, and the nearest Apple store is a few hours away to go there and get them to look at it, but I am thinking I might end up having to do that.

Apple's marketshare up 2.4 points in the latest round of data versus an increase of only 1.7 points for Google's Android.

AT&T sends messages to tiered data users at 65%, 90%, and a final warning at 100%. People who claim to be surprised they've gone over are either being lied to by their kids or lying themselves.
You've got two evils in the unlimited data thing between the two major carriers. One is telling customers that if they want a phone at subsidized pricing, they'll be forced to get rid of their unlimited data. The other is telling customers they can keep it; they'll just have to deal with a soft cap and throttling over a certain usage. Personal feelings dictate which is worse.
I've always wondered how the hell people can regularly exceed 5GBs of data use in a month. I don't ever put my phone on wifi, watch at least a half-hour of Netflix or Hulu Plus daily, stream from Google Music for an hour or so, and have all my emails and notifications set to push and I've never gone over 3.8GBs.

I've heard of people trying to use their 3G connection to power their entire home network (playing Xbox Live on it, streaming Netflix instead of cable, etc). That, on top of whatever else they do on the phone when they're out and about. I'd imagine those are the people that the carriers are targeting.
I currently have unlimited through a grandfathered Alltel plan (yes, Alltel) and while I'm loathed to give it up on principal, I don't think it would honestly matter. I just checked and my wife and I average less than a GB a month and we both have all of the usual things hooked up (email, FB, maps, etc). A 5 GB limit would be no big deal at this point.

Using the iPhone 4 on 3G, I never went over 2 GB/month. With the iPhone5 on LTE 85% of the time, I am at 2 GB after a week of usage.
I don't watch any videos.. just fb, email, imessage, web browsing, and some streaming over spotify.
Note, my LTE is so much faster than my wifi internet connection at home, so I have yet to connect to wifi.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is shown to affect more carriers. I've noticed recently that if my phone goes into its low-power mode that when I wake it with the power button I see the 3G indicator for a few seconds before the wi-fi icon appears. That would lead me to believe that the whole time the phone is sitting there unattended that background tasks like checking email are happening over cellular data.

actually i've done zero streaming over spotify with my iphone5 (i use an option for offline caching, meaning the songs I put in the playlist i listen to are cached so i don't need to stream).
I'm guessing a lot of data was used when updating apps over LTE, rather than wifi.

This is interesting
http://www.examiner.com/article/coul...pulled-feature
Verizon customers were treated to a carrier settings update on Sunday, one that was designed to eliminate a bug on the device, in which an iPhone 5 might have used Verizon cellular data while connected to a Wi-Fi network. There is speculation that the issue may be related to the "Wi-Fi Plus Cellular" feature that was found in iOS 6 betas, but that didn't make it to the final release.

And when you say "stand-by" you mean active but not actually connected to a network correct?
I swear I used to turn off my WiFi when I came into work b/c the signal at my desk was ****ty compared to just using AT&T's 3G. But using the 3G seemed to drain the phone faster than if I was sitting on WiFi the whole day.![]()

has anyone seen lines on their iphone5 screen...its like static horizontal lines.. it'll show up for a quick second and disappear..
ive seen it on my phone and 2 of my friend's iphone5s...

I get it on the keyboard in certain situations that I can't reproduce and only in the "secondary" keyboards like the special character one. It's happened only 2 or 3 times since I got the phone (release day). I should've got a screencap earlier when it happened.

I'm thinking of purchasing a iPhone 4S from someone but my wife uses T-mobile. Will I be able to unlock it for her or will I need to ask the person I'm purchasing the phone from to do it?
I've read that AT&T will not do it if they are still under contract though. I'm assuming this person still is, and just upgraded to a 5. Any solutions for this?

Had the SIM card problem hit me on Friday. Rebooting the phone only worked for about an hour or two and reseating the SIM only lasted for about a day. Went to the Apple Store on Sat and the Genius said he only read about it that morning but I was the first he's come across. He said to reset the network settings and see if that helps and it doesn't then bring it back and he'll swap it out. I also cleaned the card with an eraser (as one of the suggestions in the thread) and haven't had any issues so far. Just a heads up.

Yea I'm pretty sure you can buy just the dock as its got the same lightning connection as the bottom of the phone. So you'd use your OEM cable.

I got drunk Saturday. Started tossing my phone around incoherently. Everyone nearby acted like it was a legit baby.Called out GS3 owners on FB since my phone was perfectly fine. Made a video which you'd only be able to see if we were FB friends but anywho...6'-3" drop test = success. Aluminum dinged but nothing cracked.

I can't believe I have to ask this but I do.
On my older cell phones it would display the name of the contact with the number below it, like this:
Big Lebowski
902-111-1111
The Iphone4 does not do this. Can this be enabled in some way?
