Unless you already did it, wait a few days with jailbreaking and SIM unlocking your 3G. There'll be a new version of redsnow out Sunday-ish that will allow you to downgrade your baseband even from the dreaded 6.15 (iPad), and then you can unlock the older baseband without losing GPS.

Just pop in the sim and run it on wifi go to unlockit.co.nz find your settings. Then turn of wifi and see if your apn settings changed. If not then download redsn0w and jailbreak it. Add repo sinfuliphonerepo.com to cydia and download tetherme. Change your apn settings manually.

Did this last night before going to bed. The hardest part was creating an account on Striaghttalk. I popped the new sim in the morning and everything worked. The only input I have is that when you use wifi to go to unlockit.co.nz and when you choose the "carrier" NOT to choose straighttalk but rather "ATT MVNO". I know MMS wont work unless I unlock but does that mean no more picture messaging?

Super stoked to be paying half for the same service.

Jailbreak it. And install tetherme put in the mms settings manually. You should have mms.

Will do, I'm going to get my wife's phone working tonight on the Straight talk sim first, probably do the jail break tomorrow.....

I love the vortex for this stuff. I can ask which trim turbo to buy, post pics of my new patio and find a interesting recipe on the same site in the span of 20min......

If you're not on either the baseband 5.16.05 nor 6.15, you should be able to use redsnow to upgrade to 5.1.1, using the preserve baseband option. Otherwise you're SOL.

If you have an iPhone running iOS 5.* and for some strange reason (you switched phone numbers or phones) your iMessages app is only showing your e-mail address and not your phone number, or the wrong phone number, simply text Act1vate to +447537410277 (don't include the quotes). After that, turn iMessage on, and you're set!

No more "activation pending" or "unsuccessful"!

Hello, maybe someone can help me.

Awhile ago, my girlfriend was a passenger in a car that was involved in a small accident. During the collision, her phone was thrown from her lap and as a result, the glass battery cover cracked (It wasn’t the original one though; I replaced it for her with one of those colorful glass backs). Ever since then the phone has been having some issues. For example, the lock button on top requires you to press rather firmly on it in order to do what it should (I’m thinking this needs to be replaced?). Also she’s been complaining about calls dropping and it being hard for other people to hear her during calls (Not right away but normally a couple minutes after the initial conversation). Does this sound like the phone is done for? Or would a possible reboot/reinstall the OS possibly cure this? Any suggestions would be great. I’ve taken apart a iPhone 3 with little hassle as well as several BlackBerry’s so despite the 4 looking complicated, I think I may be up for the challenge. Thanks.

I'd take it apart following a DIY with lots of detailed pictures to make sure everything looks right. I bet something got messed up inside

The difference between replacing the back cover of an iP4 and replacing the front screen is like the difference between removing a wheel from a car and replacing the head gasket.

Also, unless you have some sort of fabulous fine pitch soldering experience and you happen to be good with a Fluke meter, you aren't going to fix any of the issues she's experiencing.

For $150, she should be able to take her phone in to an Apple store and get an out of warranty replacement phone.

Do what the guy above says. Also, I would have pulled off that back glass to make sure the battery wasn't damaged.

Can anyone recommend a good auxiliary cable that will fit in an iPhone without having to remove the case? Essentially I need one with one end being the same size as a regular ear bud connection do I can connect to my car without having to take it out of the case.

    Thanks!

Will be selling my Blk 16g iphone 4 (on 5.1.1) soon. Its currently JB'd and I will be going to AT&T to get it factory unlocked.

    My question:
How can I clear/reset my phone without losing my JB and (soon to be Unlock)?
    I totally can't remember if I saved my blobs/shsh..

Call AT&T first and get it unlocked. Yo have to do a restore after the unlock anyways. Restore as new, then re-jailbreak.

I've been out of the loop recently. Can I unlock my jailbroken Iphone 4? Has it been released yet?

  24. 07-30-2012 06:33 PM #15914
So, my home button on my 4 has been absolutely worthless sporadically for the last few months. I've made and cancelled three "genius bar" appointments because I can't get the damn thing to replicate the problem while I'm in the actual store. I called apple care and they basically told me they'd fix it (give me a new one) for $149.

It's really just pissing me off now. Apple's great customer service has finally let me down.

So, you have Apple's insurance plan and they aren't working with you or you are wanting customer service to help you? What you described sounds like an out of warranty replacement for someone without Apple Care (like me )

If you don't have insurance, Google "iphone repair (your city)". there should be several places that can replace your home button for ~$50.

I did not buy apple care, as I've NEVER needed it. It bit me in the ass this time, I guess. I finally wrote a letter stating I was going to buy a Galaxy Nexus and I miraculously got a call back today.

The $150 is what apple charges for a new phone out of warranty.

I'm pretty sure I forgot to share my latest experience with the Apple Store and my home button issues, but here it is...maybe you were having similar problems.

My home button would just stop working all together. The screen would be dark and hitting home MULTIPLE times wouldn't do anything. Or, I'd be in an app trying to get back to the home screen, pressing it over and over with no response. Luckily I had Apple Care for another 30 days and made a Genius Bar appointment.

The first thing the tech tried telling me was the oil buildup from my fingers was causing the button to stick, and he brought out this horse hair brush to "scrub" around the home button and clean it up. I said ok, but if my issues continue past my warranty, I'd like to come back in and have it replaced. As he was typing up the issue for warranty claims, I scrubbed it, used a compressed air can to blow out the crud, etc. It started to respond ok but then I managed to get the phone to freeze again with him watching.

He grabbed a cable, plugged the phone into one of their MacBooks, and a diagnostic program showed the phone had low memory, due to Instagram for some weird ass reason. I literally only have 4 apps open at all times (IG, FB, SMS, Email). So the phone was freezing due to low memory. We did a hard DFU reset and reinstalled the iOS. Within 5 minutes of playing with the phone again, I got it to repeat the non-responsive home button press and finally they said ok, here's a new phone.

If you go in and get the run around about the home button being dirty, ask them to run a diagnostic and check for low memory.

Funny part about this is, the phone I brought to them went into the river at SoWo in my pocket and none of the moisture indicators changed color. WooT

  28. 08-01-2012 03:16 PM #15918
I never wound up talking to anyone beyond the greeter at the store. I couldn't replicate it. Sounds like the same issue though.

I'm contemplating keeping the new one they are shipping to me today and selling it on eBay/CL as new in box. I have an old Nokia that I could get by with for a while - until ip5 comes out or buy the Galaxy Nexus outright for less than what I can sell the iphone for.

I am also annoyed that I'm so tied to the Apple stuff that it's just going to become more difficult to break away at some point.

Except it won't be NIB. It will be a refurb in non-descript packaging; possibly even a plastic envelope.

Got an alarm issue here. My alarm will go off in the morning as usual but the screen doesn't come on with the option to snooze or slide to turn off. I'll turn the screen on, nothing. Unlock it. Nothing. I have to respring just to turn it off. I'll adjust the alarm time so that it'll go off again in a bit and it'll work as it should with the options for snooze and turn off.

I'm on latest iOS, greenpois0n Jb. Any ideas? I have Backgrounder installed bc my music (either Pandora or iTunes) would stop playing when using Waze. Not sure if that would have anything to do with the alarm functions not popping up.

sounds like a springboard issue... have you tried restoring the device and re-jailbreaking it?

try using redsn0w next time for the JB.

    "retail stock" vs. "service stock"

it will carry with it any warranty coverage left from the original device. however as you said, you can't really call it "new" as it would set the wrong expectation.

as far as quality goes though, it's not much different than what you would get from a "brand new" device. everything you see, and the battery are brand new. some internal parts may be refurbed.

Ahhh.. that is the right wording. Thanks! I put nearly the same description you just used, too. Sold for $330... buyer hasn't paid me yet.
