Anyone have the part numbers for the other CV joints?
Forgive me for reposting, but I am formatting this for the FAQ.
I bought a 337 a couple of months ago and recently realized the inner CV boot was ripped on the left (DS) axle because of the popping noises it was making. Hence, the inner joint is most likely done for and I'm in the market to replace.
I used to drive a Honda. Axles would cost us $60 to replace at Autozone when we broke one and we got a lifetime warranty. Now, I can't bring myself to drop $500+ on new axles. :flamesuit on:

I'm wondering if anyone has found a Carquest, Autozone, Advance Auto Parts, or O'Reilly Auto Parts that carries 337 axles. If no (which is probably the case), where the help can I find inexpensive axles for this car. I've searched car-part.com for used ones only to be dicked over and have my phone calls ignored or just not returned at all.
So, I've turned to you all. Help me out. Hook me up. I don't want to spend all of my college graduation money on a freaking axle. I'd rather go get my car flashed or buy a DV or something. Any help is appreciated.
I found the following information:
My local VW dealer lists the part for $476.70 before the $200 core charge.
I found the axle by searching for the part number on a certain vendor's website (If you wish to know the name of the vendor, you can message me). The price there was $290.79 before the core. That's almost a $200 savings!
I then called my buddy at our local Audi dealership and he said their list for the part was $297.25, meaning that the VW mark up was over $175! I also get a 15% discount through Audi because of belonging to our local VW site, so that means that I'm getting this axle for $252.66 and saving over $220 by doing so.
If anyone needs the part number, it's 1J0-407-453-X. VW no longer has new axles, hence the X at the end of the part number. These will all be refurbished axles back to VW spec. The original part number was 1J0-407-271-LA, just for reference.
My suggestion: Go check out your Audi dealer before getting axles at the VW dealer. If this still doesn't work, send me a message and I'll tell you where to go for a great deal.
I got lucky this time and the CV only needed a new boot.
The first time was a different story. The boot had a small tear and I ran with it for over 6+ months. By the time the CV joint started to make noise, it was too late.
Does anyone know the part numbers for the other CV joints?
Im surprised you couldnt find it on car-part.com. ive found tons of parts for my car on there, but ive only bought a starter from there.
I replaced the boots on my axles a while back myself. For the regular gti, they sell them for like 100 bucks each. I happen to know the regional manager for advance auto in my area; he helped me out alot. He bent over backwards to help me, and it appears they used to sell rebuilt ones. But could never keep enough cores in to continue with it. I was told to hunt down a shop that rebuilds bad ones and they should be able to fix them for me. But mine werent bad, just ripped boots.

I bought these GXN Lobro's and I've been very happy with them. From what they guy told me where I bought them (local german car part place) he said they used OEM internals. Also they have solid shafts instead of the OEM hollow ones.
When I had my mk3 I traded in my OEM axles into a auto zone type of place as cores for ones with a lifetime warranty. After that I blew axles every 1-2 months I don't trust those cheap axles, if your going to go low. Even then I heard EMPI are crap regardless so don't waste your money there.
After I bought mine local I wanted to look them up online, and found them online for a lot cheaper. I paid $360 per axle

I just spent the last three days replacing the passenger axle on my 337. Partsgeek.com listed an axle for the 337 which I bought. The inner bolt pattern was wrong and the outside was setup for a nut and not the 17mm alan bolt. I got another axle from Autozone that had the right bolt pattern on the inside but still utilized the nut instead of the bolt.
I ended up have the dealership order me the axle based on the part number. I don't have those with me but I'll post them later. The dealer price on the axle was $313 after tax, which after two days seemed pretty reasonable. The after market shafts (with the exception of Raxles, but I'm not sure) just aren't set up for the 337 and I assume 20th AE.
If replacing an axle on the 337 do yourself a favor. DO NOT BUY AFTERMARKET SITE UNSEEN. Unless you can see it takes the alan bolt it WILL NOT WORK. Autozone doesn't have one, even my local Euro specialist couldn't find a suitable axle. I know $300 is a lot of freaking money, but unless you find someone parting out or get lucky and find a junker it's the best you can do price wise.
i know this is an old thread but my dri. side inner joint is starting to make noise.i have known about the ripped boot for a while now but "i will get to it,i will get to it" and never did! i'm a ase tech so no big deal taking out and rebuilding if pos. i'm sure (AE2058) is talking about just replacing ripped boots and new grease?
does anyone know if anyone makes a rebuild kit for these axles? the only place i have found one so far is at the stealership! even with my discount from having a account through my shop is almost 300 bucks!
I just got a driver side GKN axles from GAP. Will be putting it in tonight or tomorrow. Haven't decided yet. Feeling kinda lazy. It was about $320 with 3 day shipping. Before I bought it I looked into getting a rebuilt axle from VW but they don't do 6 speeds and the local shop that does work on my car said there isn't a rebuild kit for the inner CV on the 6 speed axle. If the inner is bad you have to buy a new axle which was $549 from the dealer.
both my axles are shot right now and i was trying to track some down a few days ago. GAP was out of driver side axles on Monday but they returned my phone call on Thursday and said they just received a small shipment of GKN axles in. they said this was more than likely going to be the last shipment they get. so if you need axle buy them NOW! i could not wait so i purchased some RAxles.
I talked to them Monday and he had 2 of the driver side aired in. I bought one of them. Just got done putting it in. Didn't take any pictures but is was an identical match to the one I took out minus the label that said VW (said GKN instead ).
Have a ripped boot on my 02m this thread is a great help. I think I caught it in time
tomorrow I will take the axle off, clean, inspect and re- grease the joint. Thanks to

Hi, try this shop. They quoted me OEM axles for 150.00 bucks each, these are refurbished i believe. They are located in San Diego, here's the site, the catalog on the site is outdated. Best to give them the part number and they can give you a qoute.
Basically, beat the **** out of it with a rubber mallet. It will come off, you just have to pop it past the retaining clip.
If you can put the axle in a vice, then you can simply hammer away. Try to hammer in a circle, not staying in the same place. It may take a little while, but don't be afraid to put some muscle into it. Just don't use a metal hammer.
If your boot has been torn for a while, it might be good to clean everything and check your races for wear while you're in there.
