Thread: Ok, how to tell difference between Jetta III and Jetta IV

    1. 06-23-2007 01:01 AM #1
It probably sounds like a dumb question, but I've never owned a VW before (always RX-7's, or Honda, or my fateful ownership of a Lincoln LS, ugh...) what are things that I can do to look at the body, interior, engine bay, whatever, to tell if I'm looking at a Jetta III (early 1999) or a Jetta IV (late '99).

Im about 50 percent sorry if this offends you in any way, but... the body style should be the dead give away.

Early 99 looks like that shoebox from that one brand no ones ever heard of.

Late 99 is straight up cool! Rounder...

Oh lay off already... the one I'm looking at is a crappy picture online, and it's of two different cars (one picture actually has an auto shifter, another has a manual shifter, it's weird... stupid dealer)

The only pictures I have are of the front, and they look somewhat similar in the front to me (remember the whole "never owned one before" thing?)

And yes, I did google search. And looked through the galleries on here, comparing the two, and eventually found the one I'm looking at is an early '99, and the other one I'm looking at is a late '99, based on interior layouts

    9. 06-23-2007 01:10 AM #9
mk3 was even a shame to the germans themselves... that's probably the reason why they changed the mk4 to a bora... besides, mk4 looks so much better than the mk3, NO QUESTION! even if you're old-school, the mk3 jetta is not a beautiful old-school car...

The bold part makes me wonder... have you ever driven a car???

    11. 06-23-2007 01:24 AM #11
Spade: First of all, what are you talking about? The dealer has two different cars in his pictures in the same ad, one car has an automatic transmission with a slushbox's shifter on it, the other car has a manual transmission shifter. Is that so hard to understand?

And second of all, is everyone a ***** on here, or just a select few?

Your first paragraph was a little... off then. You didnt say they were in the same ad.

And yes, to your last question. Everyone is.

      Yup, it's idiot day today.

      Buttsex can be fun though

Few people understand the psychology of dealing with a highway traffic cop. A normal speeder will panic and immediately pull over to the side. This is wrong. It arouses contempt in the cop heart. Make the bastard chase you. He will follow.

      Volkswagen Jetta

Not a reliable encyclopedia, but usually a great source of photos comparing different generations of any particular car.

      Everyone.

But, c'mon, you come on a tuner website and ask the difference between two really, drastically, different cars... if you can't see the difference, then there is something wrong.

Even if the pics are bad... are you not going to ever see these cars in person? Are these the ONLY two that you have looked at? Are these the only Jettas you have ever seen?

WHY ARE YOU LOOKING TO BUY A CAR IF YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE?

Ok as$hat, and you base this on...? apparently everyone here is an idiot, come on here without ever owning a VW, ask a question because it's hard to tell something based on grainy pictures provided online, and morons like yourself call me a "honda boy"... grow up kid. I've probably got more experience building and racing rear wheel drive cars (aka not Honda) on the road course in the last five years than you do in your entire life.
