Good job last month. Things went well and I have a new topic on my IM today. However, lets make sure we take into account the topic when voting, just because its a good photo doesnt mean that it meets the criteria for the contest.

As a reminder, please do not enter the contest unless you have an idea for a topic next month. Many winners have said "I didnt expect to win so I'm not sure what I should do for a topic." Have it in your head already or DO NOT enter the contest because if you win you MUST come up with something.

I dont have the time (especially during the summer) to watch over or organize this, however, I will post the sticky for each assignment. You guys must self regulate and come up with your own ideas.

At the end of the month, someone else will need to take the initiative and choose the new topic and let me know via IM or email (jimmy@speedarena.com) and I will update the assignment thread.

Please note that from March till October I am extremely busy and travel a lot so there may be times where I will not be able to hold perfectly to the schedule getting things posted, please bear with me, I'll do my best.

If this becomes a problem, or too much babysitting is involved, I'll unsticky it and you guys will be on your own. Please report any problems or issues directly to me, keep all assignment related questions to the person in charge that month.

    Rules

    1. Photo must be taken DURING the month of the assignment. Please keep exif intact so that others can see it.

    2. Basic Photoshop/editing is allowed (levels, exposure, saturation, sharpening, etc), but no complete altering of the photo/subject, as in, no fake blurs, no HDR, no dropping one subject into a different background, that kind of stuff. Converting to B&W and selective color is ok.

    3. NEW RULE - No borders or frames on the photos. This tends to detract from or unfairly add to a photo and the judging is on the photo itself, not how nicely you can present it.

    4. No nudity, illegal activity, implied illegal activity, or anything else that would normally not be allowed in this forum should be posted.

    5. Post entries in this thread, do not make a separate thread for each entry. You have until midnight PST on Sunday July 22nd to post your entry.

    6. The assignment thread is for posting photos ONLY, no discussion until voting starts and all ideas/questions should be directed to the person who is in charge of the assignment that month.

    7. NEW info - On the 23rd of July, use THIS thread to post critiques and who you think the winner should be. Until a better alternative is found, the person in charge of the month will tally the votes and declare a winner. Any entry deemed NOT on topic may be left out of the poll at the discretion of person in charge of month. Voting will last till the last day of the month when a winner will be chosen and the new assignment will start. So you should be ready to take over for the next month and have a topic in mind that you can send to me immediately.

Everyone is encouraged to participate regardless of skill level. With or without an SLR. It will help you grow as a photographer to see how others perspectives on a similar subject.

Person in charge for the month, Huckvw.

    This months subject:

    Industry

    Have fun!

Well I don't think I'm eligible this go-round, but I'll put one up anyway just for fun.

Sloss Furnaces is a National Historic Landmark in Birmingham, Alabama. It was operated as a pig iron-producing blast furnace from 1882 to 1971. After closing it became one of the first industrial sites (and the only blast furnace) in the U.S. to be preserved for public use.

This is part of one of the tunnels used to haul materials to the carts, that hall it to the top of the blast furnace to be dropped in.

racing is an industry, technically. If you were looking for industrial stuff, as far as buildings and such go -apologies.

NiCKnIcE - Great shot and great colors. Love it

Huckvw - Nice colors, although dead center isn't always the best composition, I think it works this time (I can't really knock you for center because my entry this month is dead centered as well)

DCI_Mr_LSD - Nice try, but unfortunately, this looks more like a snapshot to me. The sky is pretty blown out.

sdobbins - Interesting angle, but I am having trouble finding the focus point. Maybe it is just me.

Blown05GLI - This is an interesting shot, but something about it just doesn't look right. Maybe the shutter was open a little too long and that is causing the lights to be too blown out. I can't quite put my finger on it.

fazed1 - nice colors in the sky, but the subject is kinda boring. Good composition though.

JettaGT8V80 - That is a really cool building, but the fence in front kills it and makes it look like more of a snapshot.

Vert2PointO - This shot is very well composed, but I am failing to see how this fits into the subject matter for the month.

ptem - This is one of those shots that really make you think. Even though it looks like a snap shot, I really like the concept. It looks like you put some thought into this one.

imolafresh - You have a really good eye, this is a great shot to me. Even though parts of the picture are totally blown out, it adds to the surreal effect of the picture. I love the shadows, it almost looks like a dream.

That is all I got. Good job everyone.

    My vote goes to NiCKnIcE.

I emphatically disagree. The fence makes the photograph.

The building looks like a church to me. The symbolism of a church behind a barbed-wire fence strikes me.

    Just my $.02

    I vote for Blown05GLI

May I suggest/ influence a topic next month...
Live music. concerts, clubs. that kind of stuff.
    and no flippin cars!

the industry topic was too narrow of a genre and does not allow much creativity. That's why there were very few submissions this month.

We need more broad topics like:
America (so the canadians can participate ), fashion, street photography, music, abstract, sports. The more broad the topic, the more people will submit images and HAVE FUN! It seems when the topic is too specific (even the landscapes for some reason ) people start submitting images with their cars.

I disagree. I just think that a lot of people took the opportunity to post their industrial looking building shots for this month's contest. Industry is a suitably broad topic:

fashion industry, banking industry, automobile industry, aviation industry, chemical industry, coal industry, electronics industry, entertainment industry, film industry, arms industry, oil industry, service industry, tobacco industry, etc...

It took a while, but at least Vert2Point0 started thinking in a broader sense. And kudos to imolafresh and GaryC for non factory building shots too.

Having said that... I vote for HuckVW since I don't see in the rules that you can't win sequential contests.
