This car is a well-preserved, low mileage, red on red 1983 GTI.

It has a sunroof and A/C, and both work perfectly.

Mileage is documented with all maintenance receipts. I also have the original purchase papers, sales brochures, and the car’s build sheet. I am the second owner.

In May ‘06, I removed the interior, body panels, sunroof, glass, trim, engine, gearbox, shift linkage, front and rear suspension, exhaust, fuel tank, fuel pump, accumulator, fuel and brake lines. I left the carpet (glued), the A/C (charged), and the harnesses.

I cleaned, checked, and painted everything and checked the entire shell for rust before assembly, treating, refinishing and undercoating where necessary (around fasteners, pinch rails, etc…).

I replaced the clutch, brake rotors, pads, brake lines, fuel lines, and the underside gear shift boot. Exhaust is a new 2 ¼” stainless Techtonics with Borla muffler. Also new are battery, plugs, cap/rotor, air/fuel/oil filters, coolant, brake fluid, and obviously oil.

The car does not leak a single drop of anything from anywhere and every part of the drivetrain is totally clean.

All components of the CIS injection are functioning. The engine consumes no oil. All emissions components are correct. The car has always passed emissions, and I have those records.

The paint shines well and presents like a five year old car. Refinishing was kept to a minimum: the entire left side, airdam, hood, roof, sunroof, and hatch are original paint. There are “grocery store” dings, scratches and touchups. I straightened, sealed, and refinished both pinch rails. There is a dent hidden under the driver rear flare. The flare itself is undamaged, fits well and completely hides the dent. I took out the windshield and removed surface rust from where water sat under the seal. The windshield has never leaked. The cowl has been refinished and the original windshield installed with the correct seal. The windshield has no cracks. The right lower corner of its black edging is de-laminated. The windshield seal’s edges have been discreetly siliconed to prevent water from entering again. The previous owner had the right side of the car repaired. The repairs are solid and are not obvious, so I left them alone. They can be discerned because the hood gap is uneven, the rear quarter panel welds are too smooth, the door was painted without removing the mirror, door handle or the old pinstripe, the “GTI” stripe is painted (it should be a sticker), and there is blending along the rear valence.

Bumpers are straight, were sandblasted and refinished with Epoxy, and have no chips. I also have a nicely refinished spare front bumper. Bumper hardware and trim are complete and correct. There is a ½” hairline crack in the left front turn signal, and there are several in the grill’s edge.

I have two sets of wheels, both nice, neither perfect. I have the original snowflakes with cheap full-tread rubber, and with all of the lug nut covers. I usually drive the car with 15” BBS RAs with good 195/50’s.

Seats have no tears or wear and remain firm. There are two 1/8” and one 3/16” cigarette burns on the driver lower bolster (not holes). The shift boot was torn: the repair is strong but it is visible (I can’t find a correct replacement). The headliner is new and matches perfectly. C-pillar, visor, and sunroof cloth are presentable. I have matching replacement cloth. Carpet is nice. Dash is perfect and I have a perfect spare. All controls and gauges work perfectly. Every bit of trim on the car, inside and out and in the engine bay, is present and correct. Stereo is a JVC AM/FM/cassette. I have a correct Blaupunct AM/FM/cassette (I don't recall that the cassette player works). The dash panel, rear parcel tray, and door cards have not been cut.

The car drives perfectly in every way, like a car with under 30000 miles: straight, tight, no shakes, and no noises. The doors, hood, and hatch all close solidly, and every feature of the car works perfectly. It is reliable, even for a cross-country drive.

Price is $10000 firm. I will ship, at buyers expense. You can IM me with questions, or e-mail me at echassin@comcast.net

(In this pic the bumper has a bow in it and the passenger side endcap is incorrect. I replaced the bumper, and the endcap is now correct)

(The broken passenger side vent lever has been replaced)

(This is the old headliner, it was nice, but the new one is flawless)

The RA rims usually on the car:

can you please provide a large passenger side photo like the one you have of the driver's side (pic #1 in your ad).....what shape are the snowflakes in? any price reduction if you keep the extra dash and BBS rims?......also, any indications of bondo on the passenger side? thanks!

I don't know how the first pic ended up so much bigger than the others, so here's a couple trying to get the light to reflect of the different surfaces. The ding in the middle of the door is similar to many others all over the car:

The wheels have curb rash all around the peripheral rim, plus the gouges you see:

The extra dash, bumper, and the RA's are not worth much and are not figured in the price. I don't have any other use for them anyways so they go with the car.

    Oh, sorry: Bondo.

There are sanding marks visble under the paint on the rocker where the new quarter panel ends, likely bondo used to blend the edge of the new metal. Also, the weld line is not visible inside the hatch area like it should be. There are no sanding marks but there's no way a body shop ground the weld that smooth, so there must be Bondo along that line too.

I do not see any evidence of bondo being used elsewhere, but I did not do the repairs, so don't get mad if you grind off the paint and find more!

Only if I'm about to go bankrupt and need every penny (not likely )

I do have a white/blue GTI, but if you think 10 grand for the red one is a lot, don't ask how much it would take to get pry the white one from me

At $10,000, you will have that car for the rest of your natural life.

I'm bringing the "S" and the white GTI to the local Treffen show in August, and if I still have the red one (sounds likely ), maybe I'll try to get it there too.

    Can't wait to see them.

Although I think I already saw this one at 05 Treffen.

edit* I guess this wasn't your car, looking through the rest of my pics this car didn't have A/C. but like yours was original with 30k miles.

I tried to get that GTI a year ago. It was for sale by a man locally, and I tried to hold out for a lower price at $6500. Someone else ended up buying the car for that .

The only part that had been redone was the cowl. It didn't have a sunroof or A/C and the engine bay was filthy, but it had no accident repairs (and hardly any dings) .

guess he shined it up for the show and let it go afterwards.

I just can't belive there are two very similar cars in the same area.

Maybe not. I think it looked like that when I saw it, so I'm being too harsh. The top stuff had been cleaned up, but the trans/block had that thick 20 year grime covering them.

  29. 07-19-2007 03:58 PM #29
You know, if going to school to save lives didn't cost so much money, I'd buy this.
This car is my inspiration, good luck with the sale. I also second that notion of selling it to VW. A guy in the Scirocco forums sold an ultra low milage Scirocco 1 to VW and got all of his asking price for it.

I'd love to think my car is as nice as that $20000 Scirocco and that VW would want it, but it isn't and they wouldn't

Until we find another GTI with the same mileage, history, documentation, and having received the same TLC, I don't think anyone can say anything about the price.

    Except in impotent protest.
