How it sat as of June (I have changed a few things since):
How it began...The goal: To build a daily driver and weekend ripper on a $2008 budget. I am (with the gracious help of my friend Nic, Tim, Raffi and others) building up the '82 rabbit. We want to take it down for $2008 Grassroots Motorsports Challenge (build a racer for $2008).
The motor will be a 1.8 16v turbo (k26) with a 5 speed diesel tranny. The car was $200 and I sold the springs for $125... so essentially it was $75It has much rust.
Wednesdays is "car night" so there will be continuous updates to this post. Enough chat from me... here's pics!
Rusty pan
Rusty pan out!
Wheels from Nic's old Omni GLH. Light 15 inchers
Here's what I made in Dubmodder... I'll have another more accurate 3d render soon:
Satin/Satan black with white german tank crosses on it.
Now we either need to make a log manifold or find an old 20v turbo manifold
Here's where Nic cut out the rear brace for the c arm.. it was rusted all to hell.
Slight bend... We had to straighten the body:
One fender off...
one to go... the passenger side is glued on like crazy.. Thanks VW!
Bumpers
Who's that crazy bitch takin out those springs?!?
"New" to the car Engine:
German goodness... Euro front
We cut more rust out... front driver side:
Core support is out and the engine bay will cleaned up:
Painting the valve cover:
Me driving:
More pics to come... Welding of the floor pans should happen this weekend.

It keeps me under wraps... otherwise I'd spend way too much (that which I don't have to spend). Many chaps around have been very supportive and helpful with both parts and a helping hand. Since nothing can be free, I've gotten lots of stuff for amazing prices.

I couldn't do it without the rad people of the twin cities. Some things I still need:
Coilover sleeves, springs, shocks, 16v wire harness, turbo mani with a K26 flange (we may fab this). We will be making a tube bender and thus making a cage.![]()

you pai dmoney for that rust bucket?ive given cleaner cars away for FREE because i couldnt sell them for $100! running even...

A Rabbit is not to be wasted on the tentative or weak. Only the worthy are invited, and then only at your own risk. If you have even a modicum of hesitation, DO NOT buy one of these cars. Instead, leave it for a worthy soul who has already matriculated to the sublime ecstasy of what those in the know refer to as a "MK1"

Yeah... I may have paid too much for it... it was running for about 2 miles... then we dragged it to the garage. Most of the rust is in the floor pans. New floor pans came with the car, so that was most of the price.
#11
i guess you also have alot mroe rust up there in general.i had a "very rusty" car once with some surface rust on the roof and a little spot on the windshield frame...

That damn surface rustI'm just glad it's a rat... it won't be absolutely perfect. My concept is to make the engine bay and inside glossy and clean... cause it's about substance... where the power comes from. Cheesy I know... but true

Thanks... I appreciate the concern and I have done much research... I'm not a young punk kid who doesn't care what people think. I won't be putting a swastika on the car and I hate racism with a passion. The design is not set in stone... the idea was to add to the tank theme. I have many designs in my head.and the Bundeswehr still use the iron cross as a symbol... Cheers.

I bought the K26 on vortex. I'm actually looking for a mani from a 5000... Actually I think it's the s2 mani that I need because the ports match. I may get one from ebay and chop the 5th... they're pretty cheap too

HAhaTo be fair it did have brand new H&R sport springs and a battery in it and 2 new floor pans as well as a bunch of other parts. Yeah... I wish it was free though.

Thank you Thank you Thank you!!!!!
The Iron Cross is a war decoration. It has 100s of years more history than the Nazis. Weezly is right. Read up on it before you post.I think the tank cross would look good right behind the front wheel on the quarter panel where the extra blinker is on new cars

I'm new to dubs, and as you can see, I own a MKV TDI. But I love watching threads like this in the MKI forum, because it restores my faith in humanity. Corny, I know -- but you guys who take an old beaten down car and turn it into something beautiful are doing great work. You are fighting the forces of decay and entropy in the world. It's almost like a battle against nature and time itself. Thanks!

Yes! It IS about the rustThanks so much for the help Raffi! We're going to tackle more shiz on Saturday. I need to take pics with a different camera cause nic doesn't have his patch cable.

YES! Those wheels look rad. I will be sandblasting the ones we have. I would like them to be polished though...
Update from wed:
Notched some supports to reinforce the frame rails. Cut around the "extra" tail light holes and made plates to fill them. Cabby tails will look nice. We also filled random some rust holes. I got to weld a little which was cool. Raffi helped out a ton.![]()
