Dig all the sealent out and make sure every inch or so you weld the outer skin to the inner arch skin mate, other wise its about a meter worth each side per side that will be a very weak point on the car, then rust proof then add the seam sealer.

My arches were done by a pro and he wouldn't do the job unless it was done properly.

Last thing you want with doing all the work is the car to end in a ditch.

Keep up the good work, great to see another mk1 with a berg cup!

Got it... that's what I did on one side. I'll doublecheck and make sure to do the other side. Thanks for the input brother!

hey man, fyi, you can get shorter springs from ground control. the strut top idea is a good one especially if you are going lower still...we are tryin to setup a group buy on ball joint extenders if you are interested in correction that front geometry

    looking great! nice work fellas!

I think extended strut tops would be awesome. Kris sent me a pic of an extended one that was welded...

The front springs are pretty short... not sure if shorter is the answer.

Have you welded a spring perch lower on the strut housing before.... I would think lots of heat would boil the hydraulic fluid... which means removing the insert.

those dont look all that short to me, but i can only barely see em in the pic..i got a set of 6" spring from luis (aka urogolf) and it helped get my front down to where i like it, and i still have a ton of thread left.

you have to remove the insert fo sho...its alot more work thats why i suggested tryin some shorter springs first. either way will accomplish the same end result

the extended strut tops will give you just a little more sturt travel which will def help. the ball joint extenders i mentioned would correct the front geometry (you also lower the tie rod end) and get rid of bump steer and get the roll center back in the happy zone

The front springs are as short as the rear... They may be 8 inches though I suppose. So 6 inchers may be better. I could cut these springs maybe. It wouldn't take too long to just weld the perch lower though either. hmmmm

Oh... and in the pic I hadn't spun the spanners all the way down yet.

I may not need any ball joint extenders yet... It looks like I have a little ways till the c arms are level.

see two inches shorter springs mean a 2" drop, which is pretty sufficient. also keep in mind that the lower you go the more dramtically its going to change that angle on the control arms. i went from the standard 8" spring to the 6" and got low enough AND i still have about have the length of the threaded collar to go down more (if i needed to go lower which i dont)

like i said though, either way will get the desired result, but DO NOT cut the spring.

I figured you and your friend turning wrenches should save quite a bit. Just wondering if you were keeping an excel spreed sheet of the funds. I thought it would be interesting. Best of luck!

Try spinning the spring collar down a ways first.

Why do you need a new hood?

The one I have has holes in it for hood pins and the rear has some banged up parts. I just don't feel like it's worth it to salvage...

Thanks! And no need to wait till it warms up Haha.

I got the wheels for very cheap and slightly used with tires from a local dude. I plan on buyin another set of 14x9s from Diamond Racing though. They're only like $50 per wheel

not entirely sure, but depending on his plans for after the challenge he may have a class in mind where this is not allowed?

Raaaaaaaaaad. That looks badass Raffi! I should have it sitting at that hight for shows... maybe just a centimeter higher I will be racing with level c arms though. Whatever handles the best. As for the strut towers... I didn't want to hack them up. I like the stock tower look too. I had already spent so much time on the bay... I just wanted to be done... and I needed it to be done for painting day. The car will be going to my house immediately after paint. I didn't want to bother with transporting the engine seperatly

have a slight bit of negativity in the CA isn't going to be the end of the world. I don't think you'll be experiencing a massive amount of bump steer and such on the track. Obviously you dont want to have retarded ones like me, but dont fret toooo much over it.

Did you get your front suspension sorted out?

My front towers are raised 2 3/4" and most wouldn't even know it if you wanted to keep the look of the front towers. The only problem I have is that I need to make a custom front tower bar as no one makes one to buy for raised towers. The raised early style strut caps make sense here because you can still take advantage of all the company's that make upper front tower bars, just take your pick.

From the picture of your front suspension, are you leaving the huge spring perch on the front shock housing? If they were mine I'd have trimmed them down and it wouldn't be the first time I have lowered the perches by removing them and rewelding them back on.

Depending on how low you go but my understanding is that this car will see some track days so the ball joint extenders are definitely a must for you and I don't know if you've seen my build thread recently but I did a front tie rod flip kit.

At this point I don't really want to mess with the strut towers... Yours look great! But I really want to be done with welding I probably will look into some ball joint extenders though. That's a great idea.

My arms and hands are sore from sanding. I'm taking a break to eat right now... then more sanding will be happenin.

It went great... as far as I can tell from the cell phone pics. Nica and I had to leave once all the prep was done to go get the MKII ready to haul out of my garage. It was a whirlwind of a day. Non stop. Sorry I didn't give you a shout. We didn't stop runnin around till like 7. If you want to come see the car later today or tomorrow, it will be at my house I'm still waiting on a call from the dude that is bringing it to my house. There should be pics up today or tomorrow mornin.
