i just picked up the 93 gt zaskar le.

I am going to build it up later this year or early next year. i am torn between finding some 8 speed xtr (what would have came on it) or going with a modern x-9 drivetrain. the PO took off most of the decals so i am starting to look for some replacements. i also have some purple machine tech hubs that match the frame so i might have a set of wheels built up using those.

if any of you have a set of decals or any part that this bike needs shoot me a pm.

Thanks. I still need to get some decals but there is no rush on that. I have about 500 miles on it since I built it up, including a cyclocross race (one course in the series was better on a mtb than my cross bike).

I don't care if it's been over a year, I'm bumping this awesome thread. Some of you newbies could learn a thing or two from poking around and looking at the pictures of what mountain biking was about in the 90s.

I was born in 1980 and I'm all kinds of guilty about being stuck in the 90s.

I still have my first bike (trek 850 shx) from back when (93). Other than the frame, the only thing OEM is the BB. I think I have 4 different generations of LX on there. Just found a Ti Numeproof rear wheel for $25. It's on there.

A couple months back I came across this-

This is my road bike (yes, THAT Mountain Cycle.)

Today I found this on craigslist for $200. And I'm telling everyone.

    Plus all this stuff.

You never have to worry about bumping this thread. I really like the older treks, I've had a couple of the 950's (still have an 87) and is that a cinelli mtb?

if you haven't been here before, check out this online museum. it's more than vintage MTB's, but has a ton in there: http://velocult.com/museum/

Its been some time and I don't know if I've double posted in this thread.
Looking through the pics, I can see I've owned a lot of the very same equipment over the years.
This was one of my bikes.

One of the original Chehalis Washington made Klein bike frame sets. (Before being acquired by Trek)

Pressed in bottom brackets was a feature ahead of its time now evolved into BB30 style bottom brackets. This one also had rear facing dropouts. Very lightweight even by today's Carbon fiber standards.

I don't have an actual picture (digital, that is) of my mountain bike, but I'm riding an interesting old bike that I bought new back in 1992: a Reflex TWX.

I was ski-bumming in Alta that year, and Reflex had just gotten out of the mountain bike business (or maybe they went out of business altogether -- I don't really remember now). Their distribution center was in Salt Lake City and a bunch of us went down there and bought unassembled bikes in boxes. Brought them back and built them up.

Mine had a bonded aluminum frame and mid-level components (Deore LX).

Can't think how many thousands of miles are on this bike -- I eventually put semi slicks on it and converted it to an urban assault machine when I lived in Chicago and DC.

Took it out the other day for the first time this season -- have to overhaul the bearings in the front wheel. Spun it and "clickity click."

It sure is. Showed up at the coop I work at a while back, it was my size and I hadn't claimed a bike for myself so... Cinelli branded, from 1991, designed by Gary Fisher in the dark era when his independent venture was struggling before Trek bought the brand. I figured the Cinelli MTB and the mountain cycle road made some bizarre pair. I like bizarre.

And those are just regular Canti studs, there's a hanger there-

more of my bikes to be seen in the imgur albums

It frustrates me that they put all the effort to build this thing with high zoot parts and then they put $15 no name QBP bar ends on it. Guess they couldn't find an unfaded or scratched pair of purple onza raw bars (I know mine look like hell)-

I have the avid Tri dangle on my Bontager! I loved this new CNC machining era. It was awesome.

    Big Fat lightweight hubs

Still got a White bros my hard tail. Laced it up to a BCX2 Bontrager rim with a 1 cross heads in pattern. Gotta say the bearings in these rims sucked.

    Bar ends

Trek System 3. Light but the fit and finish on these was pretty ****e. They were basically glued to the aluminum clamp with something out of a toothpaste tube. But they were light.

ubrakes were history by around 1990 and elevated chainstays made it until around 1992. So most likely a 1991-92. The path the RD cable takes is insane.

Edit: 92's don't have that brace for the canti studs- http://www.retrobike.co.uk/forum/vie....php?p=1505672
    http://journals.neebu.net/khuon/arch...om-000530.html

after looking around for a hot minute, looks like anywhere from 89-91. Are the components DX?

    This thread makes me laugh.
Here is my 1998(I think) Diamondback Zetec

    Specs:
    Frame is 7005 aluminum
Shimano Deore LX derailleur 8 speed front is on there acting as a chain guide
    Sugino 175mm cranks
BB is some no name deal
Sram 9 speed chain with quick disconnect link
    Origin 8 32 tooth
Forget the name on the casette but it is one of those built from the back out. Lite!
    Wellgo pedals
    LX 8spd shifter
    Sunrims Big mammoth fat
    14g spokes-all heavy **** but indestructible
    Deore LX rear hub
    Quando front
    Shimano quick release skewers
Panaracer XC Fire-last of the good ones 26x2.1 fore
    Maxxis Larsen TT 26.2.0 aft
    Tektro brake levers and brakes
    Jaguar cable housings
    Tektro front pads
    MTB Kool stop rear pads
    Marin 6061 seat post
    Tioga saddle
    Truvativ Husselfelt stem
    Aheadset
    Titec El Norte bars
    Oury grips
    Trans-x seat clamp
Old Marzocchi bomber fork I think 115mm

The bike weighs 28lbs. It goes everywhere. It has easily 35-40,000 hard miles on it. You read correctly. Granted, parts have been swapped out.

...and on a slightly different buildup of parts

Those Kenda stick-e 2.6s barely fit the frame. Tolerance was something like 1mm out back.

I bought the bike waaay back when withthis fork

I somehow found this thread and had to register just for this thread. I saw another s(9-six) a few pages back but there weren't any pictures.
I picked this up for $20 at a cyclocross race from the guy who lived in the apartment above the golf course clubhouse. He didn't know a ton about bikes and I should have checked to see if I could get the computer to go with the base, but I was glad to end my quest for a beater bike. (my original plan was an old rigid steel bike with semi horizontal dropouts) he had kept adding signs through the day, each more desperately trying to get rid of it than the last. Got it home and started assessing the damage. chainrings shot (teeth bent over/broken) cassette shot, fork sucks (rockshox quadra 21r, whoopdy woo anyone have elastomers for it?) rear shock is somewhat functional (needs to be rebuilt, secondary seal is bad, rebounds to a loud clunk, cane creek laughed when I asked if there was any chance they had any left) super dirty, tires are questionable, one is junk, the other was starting to crumble on the sidewall (I really like the rubber on them, but the gumwalls suck) seatpost bond to clamp is shot, seatpost cracked almost all the way down (explains the bad bond) excessively pansy-like saddle, hard brake pads... etc...

The bike was built in 95, has a 95 anniversary sticker, but is an S(9-six) which indicates a 1996. just odd things that I found.

an afternoon at my awesome LBS where he lets me fix my junk if he isnt busy is just what the bike needed. I swapped a 50 mile old drivetrain off a bike I had to retire because of rear axle "bendage" every time I took it out. -new chain, cranks, chainrings, and cassette- "free"
swapped the garbage saddle for a take-off Giant saddle that even sorta matches the paint-free
had to do some grinding on the little chainring because it needs a longer BB axle to fit the crank right, but at this point it was still a "cheapest is best" build
put some tires on it (they are my summer race tires), those are already off and replaced by some free used innova studded tires for winter. once summer comes and I go tubeless on my race bike i will toss some Kenda Slant sixes on it that I have.
new brake pads, took a bit of jury-rigging because it had a lot thicker pads on it, and all the new pads are a thinner design.- $14
    new seatpost- $20
I don't think the brakes are stock. it has all the canti parts... if I get a different fork I will try to find one with disc mounts so I can run a front hydraulic hayes from my old bike.
if anyone knows of or has good cheap replacements for the fork (quadra 21r) and shock(cane creek AD-4) let me know! I would like around 80-100mm useable front travel.
long term I might make it a singlespeed and really mess with people on the trails. if the shock wasn't so clunky and the fork actually squished I think I might actually use it more than my current fs racer.
I get lots of comments on the long stem, which is also sporting a poorly applied vintage rockshox sticker, and a very cool sunfaded dark amber color that was black many years ago. the frame is beat up, lots of very small dents and scrapes, the drive side chainstay is ugly where the broken teeth had caused violent chainsuck and the person just kept pedaling. not really much anodized on this at all, but the rear derailleur has a cool black chrome finish.
oh and the weight? 29lbs even (with newer spd pedals).

photos are in reverse order, sorry.
I was having some fun, the bike was stretching and exercising haha.
