Thread: 4x6 SPEAKERS stereo on the Rabbit parcel shelf question

  1. 08-24-2007 08:20 AM #1
Couple of questions about the 4x6 speaker accomodation in the Rabbit rear parcel shelf.

First, were these ever installed as a factory option?

Second, if they were a factory option, how in the heck were they installed and fastened? All I see are 8 plastic pegs sticking down from the plastic grille. 4 of those seem to be spacers for the adapter mounting flange that comes with the speakers?

If the speakers did come as factory, was the plastic grille cut out of the shelf?

Fourthly, why is an adapter plate necessary to mount the speakers?

Fifthly, what are the best 4x6 speakers, do you think?

I've been wondering how that worked, as well. I imagine there was some sort of locking fastner thing. Maybe it was just one of those funky washers that went on the peg. My 4x6's don't fit there. I've considered some really short sheet metal screws or something.

As for 4x6's, I have some pioneer 4x6's I got free. I think they are like TS-G4611 or something.

The way I have mine fastened is 4 small carriage bolts glued-in with construction adhesive that act as studs.

I thought they might have used the one-way washers, like on the hood release lever, but the outer pegs don't have the clearance from the side for a washer of necessary diameter to fit.

The only thing left I can think of is maybe they used a spring steel pincher clamp, (I don't know the proper name), shaped like a sideways "V". Plumbers use those things to set the drain plunger lever on the backside of a sink.

I'll see if there is something listed in ETKA, because I don't know how long my glue is going to last.

Just as an aside, I think the only place VW used Torx screws on the car was those two per parcel shelf. I think this is funny.

i had fastened my 4x6's on those pegs by simply putting the speakers on the pags and sliding on the little "L" shaped metal clips onto the pegs. worked very well. no modification was needed.

    Thank for all the replies.

I expect a stereo installtion place would carry those clips.

The factory clips are a PITA. Little rectangles with slots that are overkill imo.

They were mounted in the speaker pods in the back. They worked just fine.

the best 4x6's are 6x9's sitting in the rear passenger footwells instead

Exactly where would they be located and installed?

This is the best idea I could come up with. Ok, if you don't overtighten the screw.

The screw piece is from an electrical service box, for the ground wires, usually comes in strips. The retainer is from a halogen floor light, the part that retains the quartz bulb:

This should be the correct part for fastening the speaker to the shelf assembly.

It is just a puch clip. They go easy, but can be a pain to take off.

every set of speakers ive ever pulled from a VW, facotry or otherwise (all A1s and A2s including corrados) used those 10mm thread cutting nuts on the plastic pegs.

Interesting. The nuts must have an oblong washer or tab that goes with them because there a regular sized nut will not reach the adapter ring to support it, at least on ones I have installed.

That's the best way to go, really, and you don't need big machine screws either.
