Since I bought the car with 82,000 miles on it the intermittent part of my wipers never worked. I am wondering if it is the switch or if there is something else I should be looking for or overlooking...

If I have to replace the switch, how easy is it to do... here's a pic of it.

What do you mean marked 99 or 198? Fuse?

I should also add that the wipers themselves work fine. High and low. Also the MFA works fine. Just the intermittent function is non existent.

Shown here, its relay # 198.

You'll have reach up into the fuse area to grab it (or drop the fuse block down..)

Thanks to both of you. I will pick one up tomorrow. Would be INCREDIBLE to have intermittent again. I've never had the pleasure of having it since i've owned the car, over 2 1/2 yrs.

      Bump. Little clarification...

Ok, so I dropped the fuse box down and there is no #198 or #99. On my car where the #198 is supposed to be there is an #188 and there is no # in white on top. Instead there is a relay that has almost like a fan looking portion at the top. Can anyone help me clarify which relay is the actual intermittent relay. My car is a 1998 GTI VR6, manufactured in Oct. of 1997. Thanks!

Ok here is what I have on the bottom bank of relays, right above the fuses (from left to right). Sorry no digi cam

first bank is blank : #196 : #188(this has the fan thing on top) : #110 : #53 : #167(last relay on bottom bank right side)

      Help

So to explain it all, where #198 is on that picture, I have a #196....Is this the same thing? Is this the intermittent relay?

Under 1stvwparts.com the #196 part number says its called the "WARNING TIME RELAY". The part # off my relay is 1HM 919 433A and the superceded part # is 1H0919433A.

I pulled the relay from my 99 Golf and replaced it with a variable programable inttermitant relay. The factory one which I have in my hand has a different part# than you quoted above but it is relay #196. Replace that relay and you should be golden. If I get a second I'll try and dig out the part # for the programable relay for you it was well worth the extra $ IMO.

Does the #196 you have work? Wanna sell it to me I went to the junkyard the other day and every relay was ripped out of every mk3 I looked at...

      The part # for the #196 I have is 1HM 955 531 C

The superceded part # is 3B0955531. Is that the part # you have?

      IIRC..

      99, 196, 197, 198 will all work.

99 is the only unit that can be programmed (OBDI style)

I actually was just introduced to an aftermarket relay that is programmable from .5 sec to 20 sec. relay time. Will be awesome.

Ok so anyone wanna explain this to me and maybe explain how I can maybe fix this relay easily.

So tonight I go down and im looking at the relay, I plug it back in and boom my intermittent worked for a second. I then leave the intermittent on and reach and and squeeze the relay and the wipers actually worked and the relay clicked. This only happens when I squeeze the relay. Can I take this piece apart easily and fix whatever may be wrong?

id do some sort of lame and practical solution like put a ziptie around it really tight to simulate the squeezing haha

Anyone have an extra #99 or #196 relay I could buy?

    20. 09-28-2007 03:59 AM #20
If you are going to replace it anyways, might as well try to open it up, The last relay I opened up I think I broke the little snapy things that hold it together but I could see all the insides, it was kind of cool. I would pop it open and see if something is causing it to not work.
