I've been watching this post for a while now...been meaning to post my beater, finally got around to uploading some photos.Nishiki Olympic 12 road frame, powdercoated and all stickered up to look ratty. Mavic rims, Shimano front hub, Old Campagnola non flip flop rear, 52T front, 18T rear, Speedplay X2 pedals, hacked/flipped drop bars, Shimano 105 BB, Sugino cranks.
I've got so many miles on it, it's not even funny. Eventually I'll build up something nicer, but till then I'll just RIDE IT LIKE I STOLE IT!

looks like a disc mtb wheel to me.alot of guys also put wider axles on front disc hubs and use them in the rear as fixed hubs with this type of cog.

i'm considering doing a fixed gear bike with my redline monocog. i think it'd look sick with no break mounts. somehow i know i'd end up doing a rear disk just to be safe

yea rear brake dosent do all to much on a fixed set up. do a front brake, but i wouldnt do a disk if you were gunna do a brake, i see those as to grabby, you want something that more or less just slows you down when you grab it. not something that will completely lock.

nothin wrong with a disc. modulation is key with any brake.
a disc up front would look pretty cool. just gonna be hard to find a rigid fork with disc tabs.

Where can I buy one of these disc mounted fixed gears?
It looks like a really easy way to convert a bike to fixed gear, especially since a rear brake is not recommended.

One Speeds
One-speed bikes are very easy to convert, since they usually already have 110 mm spacing. Unfortunately, most adult-sized one-speed bikes are not very good performers, and tend to be too heavy and sluggish for enjoyable fixed-gear riding. Some of the better-quality cruisers work OK as fixed gears, but watch out for low bottom brackets.
One of my favorite bikes is my 1916 Mead Ranger. This was originally built as a coaster brake bike with 28 inch single-tube tires on wood rims. It was wheelless when I bought it at a flea market, so I set it up with some nice quality '70s vintage 630 mm (27") wheels and modern tires. It's surprisingly pleasant to ride.and it says that some bikes aren't enjoyable as fixed but also that good wheels and tires usualy do the trick. is this true? the bike has some good city slicks and some good wheels.
also it's built by redline so the geometry may be a little bmx based. am i talking out my ass w/ that or is it somewhat true?

Thanks Muffler Bearing and Banned wagon!![]()
I ordered a stainless 18T for the Columbia bike, and I'm hoping my black Shimano crankset will bolt on from my old Trek 830, because it has a Rock Ring on it, and it has the right type of chain.

just finished mine. looks the same as in the picture, but with a track cog and not a freewheel. with city slicks and some snow, it's a blasti want some bars. maybe some mustache bars or some drop bars. one thing though cheap. price not quality.

I just bought a SE "Drift" Single Speed on New Years Eve for only $239.
My bike came with the Mountain Bike style bars and brake levers. My bike is now in the shop to have the bars, stem and brake levers converted all to Road Bike style. I am very excited to see the end result.I will post pictures once I get it back.

Actually, that's not the reason for a lot of people. It happens that I enjoy myself on it more, have a better sense of control, and like not having to worry about bangin' my derailleur around. I like not needing to think about slowing and accelerating, but being able to just pedal.
#140
you have a better sense of control with no brake? no coasting ability?its a different ride, a different experience, builds good cadence and eliminates complexity in your bike. I ride fixed with a front brake. I use it for wet(which i havent really ridden on) and emergencys. i feel better with it....i truly have a better sense of control.
