It's a trial and error kind of thing, and even then it's still kind of a craps shoot hoping that you'll get proper chain tension. If the wheel you are using has a flip flop hub, just use a freewheel and a chain tensioner.

Come to think of it, what rear wheel are you using? That frame is going to have 135mm rear spacing, where as 99.9% of track hubs are either 110mm or 120mm.

More info on how exactly you're throwing this thing together please.

yeah, trial and error, or if it's a real biotch you can use a half link

can anyone help me with finding a magic gear on a modern derailleur dropout frame?

i have a friend in dire need of transportation other than walking and i've got everything except a crankset laying around to build him a bike.

it's an '04 specialized allez pro frame (i got it dirt cheap), 56cm.

This might be a stupid question, but if you lock your bike up and you see someone trying to break the lock (i.e. Stealing your bike) - Are you allowed to physically defend your bicycle? If you call the police, by the time they arrive, your bike is gone, but if you just happen to have a baseball bat in your messenger bag, and you give him a swift shot to the knee, he'll wait patiently for the police/ambulence to arrive and take the appropriate actions thereafter.

I just want to know what we're legally allowed to do in this situation...

lucky for me, I'm a big guy... I would not call the police unless the guy is already too far. if he is still there, its fair game

Just make sure you have witness' who see him attempting to steal your bike; that way when the police arrive you have someone on your side...be sure the scumbag bike thief would say you just randomly beat him.

Personally I'd shoot them in the foot or knee.

if you hit him in the knee with a bat, im sure you can ride alot faster than he can run after you

after you take out his knees, should give him a shot in the collar bone with the bat and then a punch in the dick

if you are able to knock him down, pee on his head.

You're right...I probably wouldn't. But are you willing to bet that with a gun pointed in your direction?

I'm not advocating shooting anybody. As a matter of fact two rights don't make a wrong. Personal protection and the protection of ones personal property are two different things (unless you're in Texas and you're in your house).

So...in the end this is just the internet and this is all just talk.

    Back to the sweet bikes!

    White phils or silver?

they're the white h+son's...700c...laced to silver high flange phils.

i had a couple friends out in new york pick up the rims for me from a shop that had them in stock...paid 120 a rim. i know they're a lot more than the velocity's, but i wanted them more for the unique factor, and the fact that this will be a damn near indestructible wheelset that will last me a long time.

good note...the rear hub came today, front comes tomorrow...bike shop saturday morning

Enjoy it while you can. A few shops here in SF are already sold out on their pre-orders. The streets will be littered with them soon enough.

Funny, I just talked to my friend who saw a set in person built up at his shop. Turns out they have pretty thin sidewalls. Looks like they'll be pretty prone to buckling.

So more original than Velocities? Not for long.

    Stronger than Velocities? Nope.

    Significantly more expensive? Yes.

LOL. So... deeper than a dp18 or velocity, but not as deep as a zipp 808 or zipp 1080.

    Check.

Nothing about it ... some companys actually give measurments, in mm.

that's in sf though...here in indy, i know of 2 other people who each have one rim...both 650's that got them the same time and place as mine.

it'll be awhile before i see them around here

while those wheels are beautiful the only indestructable part will be the phils. velocity deep vees are heavy for a reason.

if you want bomb proof/cost effective 3x 36 spoke some deep vs to formulas. cheap and you can ghostride the whip.

    crap

surly hubs are the most bomb-proof cheap hubs ive ever seen.
$70 and they'll outlast your grandkids!

p.s: mine are laced to 27"X 7/8" whaaaat?

I have a set of fusions. They're nice. I've used as around town wheels for my Merckx and my Waterford. Just a bit more understated than Deep Vs which I think looks a little nicer on older steel frames. Right now their job is going to be to hold up my Pista Concept '09 while I decide on what wheels I want to build for it.
