Thread: Shaved, Tucked, Customized Engine Bays - Pics, Theory, Discussion

What gauge of wire is best for using for different parts of the bay? And single core/multicore?

Always use stranded wire. For wire gauge, use the same or one size bigger for whatever your lengthening.

Yup. If you have a scrap yard go strip a harness and use OEM. To save the headache I sourced a front-back R32 harness for my project. All wiring is OEM which I really enjoy.

Could not deal with the gross reservoir.

Don't mind the alloy lines and blue tee, this was just a test fab. Will do in SS with a black tee. Ordered a remote res that will sit behind the booster.

Bay is sooooo gross and dirty though

You build is simply superb. I liked it as a 1.8t but so much more now with the TDI. I have yet to see interior pics since the rebuild I am curious to what changes happened there.

I'm wires tucking the driver side of my 1.8t. I don't want anymore wires to go through my firewall. Where can I run these wires and make them back into the car without using the firewall?

Pull back the carpet and find where the frame rails come into the car, from what ive read on here its pretty distinct where they are, drill through into them and run ur wires there, someone please correct me if im wrong

Sounds like a lot of work.. This is my first wire tuck and I've got all the harnesses separated but now I'm overwhelmed and stuck here..

I can't figure out where to run anything.

Alright, let me get this right.

This harness gets pulled through so it's inside the car, then there is a whole drilled and I put them through along the frame rail. Are they along the frame rail or actually inside?

Then this harness stays in the rain tray and runs in the fender

Then lastly the engine harness (with the injector sensors, coil pack sensors, ect) goes along the rain tray and through the fender?

Also, where is a good place online to order heat shrink from? And how much should I buy? Yes I know I can get it at auto stores and such, I'd just rather order bulk amount online.

    Thanks!

alot of patience and a coat hanger help to get it through the frame rail..

also remove as much of the harness that is not going to be used so you dont have to pull that through too...less wire easier pulling.
and seperate your main harness and your engine harness and run them seperate. I even made two seperate holes for them. One for the main so that it drops down behind the abs and one for the engine harness and it drops down above the brake fluid reservoir, then you can tuck it behind booster and up the coolant hoses

...ohh and it might help you if you pull your wiper motor just so it's not in your way.

That post actually helped me a good amount. I have the engine harness totally out of the car, like its sitting on a bench. I haven't even looked at that yet. What do I do with this? Like unplug it or what, I don't wanna screw with it if I don't know what it is or how to take it apart. It's in the rain tray on the driver side.

Under that cover is a bunch of multicolored plugs, these plug into the dash and chassis harness. you run the abs harness wires and such thru that cover. You can drill a hole in the cover and run the wires thru and then connect them back together to the abs harness and such in which you ran into the frame rail and came out by your feet under the dash.

    ^^this

and like I said before remove that wiper motor assembly and then you can pull that plastic cover off and see what your getting into...depending on the model and features there's only a few multicolored plugs in there that you can disconnect if need be to help move things around

Who is interested in starting a new project. Complete Master brake cylinder/booster tuck. Nothing in the bay..

Would like to gather some ideas. Ive seen it done on mk1s but they have plenty of room under dash.

I'm still trying to work on deleting the abs. Does anyone know what I need from a mk3? And which mk3 I need them from. My abs is already messed up. I'd love to just get rid of it completely.

I would be interested but how exactly u plan to do this? The problem wouldn't be relocating it, it would be checking and filling the fluid, I think

They already exist. Hot rod guys have used them for years. Just need to make room behind the dash.

Ok, so this harness is the last harness that's left in the, so my is my next step to cut the harness and pull it through? Btw, my dash and seats are out.

Wire tucking and ABS deleting is not a job for the weak hearted. You have to have some basic knowledge before you move forward. If you did not know that you have to cut harness, i dont think you want to proceed with this. There is so much involved that if you make a mistake and dont know what youre doing, you may never get your car up and running again.

Oh I know, I've already done it. I extended one of them and re-ran the other two. But him looking at all those wires n just saying "I need to cut this" made me worry for him haha.
