Easily fixed and it's one of those details that is overlooked.

It wasn't overlooked on his car.

I realize it might have been left to show off the equal length headers. But things look unfinished in this state. I am not knocking that car in anyway as I love it. I just think that one additonal step would have made it that much better. It's not the simplest process to do what I've been talking about. But it's nowhere near the hardest either.

Would the tray even fit there with those headers? I think it looks just fine the way it is.

No real tips to share, other than get in there and figure it out. Tips given here are just going to confuse you once you get in there.

You won't ever have either. A DIY is out of the question. And a walkthrough is just to much. There are to many steps and custom bit of fabrication that need to be done. Every car is going to be done diffrently. This is definetly the case w/ a 1.8T where there are so many diffrent levels of tune due to turbos and the such.

exaclty the amount of work inolved in shaving a bay is way beyond what most can imagine....for instance trevis....his car was in the making as it sits now for 10 months.....it doesnt happen overnight...SO many hours of removing stuff....moving wires....doing bodywork on the rails, tray, strut tower, setting the motor up, mock up, figuring out where you put something, and more...from the portion of the job i helped out on I would say it is a huge undertaking....def nothing for the weak hearted....its quite something to see your car sitting in the garage completly taken apart and no where near completion

    a small comparison....in progress..

    finished

a walkthrough or a diy cant cover nearly a small portion of whats required to shave a bay....you have to be able to firgure it out yourself...and on occasion have some help from a few knowledgable vw techs

So far it looks like Trevis has had better success keepin his car on the road tho.

His looks great, no need to demote his bay.

    -keep it real-

It's interesting how you can see in this thread that there are kind of different styles to modifying engine bays, just as modding the exterior or interior of the car does. So with that in mind, there is never really a true "better", its always just a matter of preference.

Personally, the best to pull it off in a MarkIV on the tex.... was Lag.

Reason being, it combines both the clean look you get from removing/smoothing everything, with the mean aggressive look, primarily emphasized by that ridiculous exhaust mani!!

I wish I could of gone to that extent, but I feel the same way. tho I personaly dont like the look of the manifold.

oh and if any one is thinking of smoothin out the seams on the bay they should send me an IM as I have a critical point of info for you.

Dan did that as well, (pic from pg. 2, I can't find any others)...

This obviously wasn't the finished stage though.... man those stock mounts are ugly! Before VF came out with theirs.

That is funny because I really don't care of that look either. It reminds me of Alfalfa, nice and even and smooth and then BAM, pipes in your face...

Not bashing his work at all, it's still sick.

I think you and Trevis have/had the best looking bays overall for function and form.

I dono if you have ever looked at the wireing of the mk4s there Travy but it is a large amount of wires.

VentoDan had a VR and they have less wires but besides that he still mostelikely was running Standalone.

I also would bet money that Lag also was running standalone.

Running standalone isnt the hardest thing in the world but a whole new ball game as you have to rewire the whole engine, set it up to work along with the stock system so your Lights all still work or rewire all that too, and also redo your Gauges as your RPMs will not be sending any more. so you either have to do a whole new custom setup or take apart a RPM gauge and put it in the stock setup. if it will even fit.

and then there is the Regular driver aspect.
If I had let my car live long enough this would have happened eventually but alas it will not happen any time this century.

oh and any one Correct me if I am wrong.

Well I don't own an MK4 anymore But one thing I never liked on the car was the piece right over the headlights. I'd like to see one fiberglassed over smooth and maybe painted to match the rest of the engine, ala MKIIs.

Best of luck. See ya around

92 more years!!!!!!!! SWEET! Pics when finished!

And yeah, I used my rain tray to hide a whole lotta stuff. Removing that would have required soooo much work and pretty much a new wiring harness.

I have also been thinking about this ever since I saw a picture of it once on a 20/25th Anniv. I'll take a look on my HD. It's getting done on my car at some point for sure.

Edit - Here you go, save it on your computer if you want because I don't have much space on my school server to keep it up long.

I still think you should paint the centers on your wheels pink tho.

It will be the next thing to stagered wheels on a FWD car....
