Thread: How much does a car's value drop, after a accident?

    1. 11-07-2007 01:57 PM #1
A car was in a accident, so how does one determine the car's value when they go and resell it?

Kelly and NADA doesnt seem to have a section for this, endless I have over looked it.

So anyone have any experience with this?

Have you traded or sold a car that was hit?

Depending on the damage and the quality of the work, it shouldn't be a great difference, assuming it wasn't totalled and rebuilt as a salvage. My Diminished Value check after my accident was $4600, but I don't think it's worth THAT much less than book.

My Audi? No accidents whatsoever. The frame rail bent on its own.

I would think that would be covered under the 10 yr/100,000 mile chassis warranty?

i got NO diminished value checks from other insurance co's after my GTI had two not-at-fault accidents causing $7500 in damages. i was LUCKY to be able to sell it AT ALL. i had 8 people turn me down upon disclosing that it had an accident. took me 3 months to sell...finally a guy came and loved the car, didnt care that it had been in accidents, got a PPI done and it was sold.

how do you go about getting a diminished value check after an accident? and do they only do it when you're not at fault, or do they do it when you are at fault as well?

I crashed my 02' GTI a few years back.... it needed $10,500 of repair work. It was repaired and the quality of workmanship was excellent.

My lease soon came up after I got my car back & Volkswagen said they would have to take $6,000 of the blue book value of the car if I traded it in for a new lease or if I wanted to buy a new vehicle.

      Screw that!

I took my car to Mazda instead & they knocked off $4,500 from the blue book value.

I opted for the lesser of 2 evils.

      that sucks.

my insurance company just cut me the check, and I was at-fault.

All depends if they can tell, seriousness of the accident etc.

If it permanently flaws the car - frame damage, welding, that sort of thing - then sure, a deduction is appropriate. But if its all bolt on stuff that is removed - bent wing and scuffed bumper, for example, on a modern car which you can remove and replace to factory spec or better I don't see why it should?

Obviously one with no accidents at all is worth less but I would never except a deduction on my 330ci Sport that was keyed end to end and resprayed, for example.

      I know... seriously!!

I was ALMOST all done with the paperwork for trading my car back in and being done and over with it.... at the last minute before everything was taken care of, the tech guy (or whatever title he had) came in and said "Wait... the car has been in an accident..... we need to re-evaluate the car."

      ARGHHHH!!!

Well, if the dealer had already signed the documents you should just have signed faster handed them back and called it a day.

When the dealer that took my mom and stepdads '06 Civic in for trade, they said the wasn't much of a market for used Civics. The Civic was on the lot for a week before it was resold.

I want to avoid getting ripped by the dealer when i trade my gti in with a accident (5k damage) in, so i want to see how this affects my value.

That's around the same amount for my not-at-fault accident. They were going total my car though until they realized it had a VR6, which apparently is grounds for not totalling it. I really wanted a new car

i wish mine was totaled. , This is reasoning behind me wanting a new car.
