Thread: Accidentally poured wiper fluid into the antifreeze

    1. 11-27-2007 01:43 AM #1
      Hi all,

I just bought a Volkswagen Jetta 5 months back and I have to say I've been loving it. Unfortunately, I had an accident earlier today in which I mistakenly poured windshield wiper fluid into the antifreeze tank. Immediately realizing my mistake, I did not make the mistake of turning on the engine but instead drained the anti-freeze tank to the level it was at before I accidentally dumped wiper fluid into it. Since I live in the great north, using teflon wiper fluid is a must here. To be more specific, I used wiper fluid that was capable of not freezing in temperatures upto -49 C. My question is, should I take the car to a Volkswagen dealership and have them flush the system and then refill it with antifreeze (and pay the exorbitant fee I'm sure) or is it fine to just drive my car the way it is? Also, if I don't take the vehicle for servicing, will this result in the decline of warranty coverage?

      Thanks for any help!

      FEW details about the car:
Brand New 2007 Jetta with 2.5L engine
Yes it has the VW G12 antifreeze in it (the pink stuff)

If it happened to me, I'd simply siphon out down to the normal level, and drive. I can't imagine such a small amount of the stuff having any sort of negative effect on the cooling system.

When my car was about a year old, I topped my coolant off with tap water.

Unless it was a super bright color, it should disappear really quick.

Warranty? Just don't tell the dealer you put washer fluid into the cooling system...ever! They use 'any' statement to weasel out of warranty work.

      how does that ever happen..

Thanks for the advice SootHappens. Fortunately it was only 1 - 1.5 Litres of the stuff but I did manage to siphon it out (no telling how much mixed ofcourse).

As to how it happened... well suffice it to say its my first VW and normally I'm pretty confident around cars and I didnt quite look to see that the cap had a thermometer vs a wiper fluid icon on it. Also, since the anti-freeze looked pink, I just assumed it was wiper fluid without checking. Had i checked a bit earlier then maybe I might have avoided it.

dude.... you're fired from ever opening the hood ever again.

Not to be too much of an *******, but they put pictures on top of the caps for people like you.

It's idiot proof.... or apparently, they thought it was.

i wouldn't turn it over at all, instead drain the entire system, and refill.

sheesh! dont be so mean! VW uses that big round container for the coolant with a very large, inviting top that the average person would assume is just supposed to be opened and dealt with. the wiper fluid container is less obvious than the coolant tank

anyway, just siphon out the entire resivour and buy some 22 dollar coolant at the dealer and mix and top it back off. it only re circulates when the car is running so us a different car to get to the dealer.

I agree with him, I don't think you need a flush, but I would drain the fluid and then replace with some new stuff. It is not that expensive and you could do it yourself at home with a hose and bucket.

      Good luck.

If it makes you feel better one of my friends accidentally put diesel in his MK4 GTI and didn't realize it until after he was on the highway. The car survived but barely. Your mistake is much less severe so don't worry too much.

This reminds me of a thread several years back where the guy put antifreeze into his wiper fluid resevoir. He then proceeded to drain it by spraying it out the nozzles all over the car ..... lOLOLOLOL!!!!

Where are we going and why am I in this handbasket?

      Relax.

Windsheild washer fluid is often used as an antifreeze by people winterizing their motorhomes...if you managed to siphon off the majority of it you will be fine. I would not advise topping off with it regularily but the little bit you got in there is not going to be a huge problem. IMO.

I can't believe that 'tex geniuses here aren't all over the guy above who topped off with tap water...that is a no-no. If you add water, distilled only. No contaminates and less chance of corrosion.

I did this when I was like 16. In my defense my Dad was inexplicably storing some antifreeze in a windshield washer jug.

I used the washers and my windshield was a greasy mess!

      *edit I drained it correctly...

...well it was bottled water from the water cooler, which should be better than tap-water... and only about 2 cups anyway. - not worried about it.

I would just empty the anti-freeze tank out completely and fill it back up. I think you would be fine.
