Really cool story! Makes me want to do a mechanical TDI swap into my cabby instead of the 1.6D.

    Hello!

Thanks for the feature, Cherise! And thanks for the comments, everyone. This submission has been two years in the making. I just kept making updates to the car and wasn't satisfied with the submission until November or so. The timing of the 10 years/250k was impeccable. HERE ARE MORE PHOTOS. And HERE IS A SHAMELESS VIDEO I uploaded to MySpace to celebrate the milestone (640x480 35-MB version HERE). It's no Matt Crane production. But I had fun making it.

    Take Care,

    Scott

    Hi,

Thanks for the continued comments, everyone. I have considered relocating the battery. But only briefly. I value my trunk space too much for right now. But I'll reconsider it again if I ever need the space under the hood for anything else. I've never considered the Euro core support. I'm simply not that serious about autocrossing. The bang-for-buck is likely not worth the gain.

    Take Care,

    Scott

It was kind of funny looking at this article featuring a car that looks nearly exactly like my own. Except yours is actually clean Underneath, your car is very enviable. Nice work

I noticed your intake plumbing in the engine bay does not look stock. Mine's starting to get soft and die (I'm at 200,000 miles), so I'd love to hear about what kind of hoses you used.

Yup. I pride myself on using the car to the max. Just today, I made four trips to a landfill while doing some early "spring" cleaning. I'm also looking to build a sort of "weekender" package for my utility trailer so I can do some light camping with my family. I haven't felt compelled to buy a pickup yet. I have a 4x6 bed and get 35mpg while towing and, of course, much better when I'm not.

I'm glad so many liked it. I have other videos on my website and at MySpace. I try to time them with the music and, if possible, match up some of the content with the lyrics. Timing Dream Theater's music is usually pretty challenging.

I got my hoses from http://www.HighTempSilicone.com. The only piece that's still stock is the small "S" hose just before the intercooler (just forward of the power steering fluid bottle). I'll likely have that one replaced with a custom metal piece and use HTS couplers. I also have everything finished off with HTS's T-bolt clamps. I've been happy with their products and their fast service.

NO SALE! I usually buy my cars new and run 'em 'til they're done for. This one has lasted the longest of all of my cars; and I've abused it more than any other as well. I have no idea when it will be spent. But I tend to replace worn parts with new ones. I hope that results in a LONG LIFE.

    Take care,

    Scott

HAHA! Yeah, I stuck with one small VHF antenna for years. I used a larger one when I was in the desert so I could punch out 100 watts on FM. But it is virtually impossible to get out on HF without adding a larger antenna. Here's a SHORT VIDEO of the HF antenna's tuning cycle. Yes, it looks obscene. But it gets the job done.

For those who didn't see the photo album, here's a photo of some radios' control points:

I travel 160 miles each way each weekend to visit my family (I work in DC and have a home in SEVA). So tuning the ham bands helps the trip go by a bit faster. And the scanning capabilities of the smaller unit is handy during group drives.

    Take Care,

    Scott

When i was going to school in rochester, I had a hamstick on the back of my 95 golf. I could hit south africa regularly on 20m with great reports, and I have a nice long list of contacts from my drives from Rochester to Philly/Pittsburgh. Definitely keeps you occupied on the drives alone, music gets boring after a while.

There's a few more than you think. I tripped over THIS SITE, dedicated to mobile ham operators. HIS PHOTO GALLERY has several VWs in it. I think he's going to add mine soon.
