Can someone please educate me on when the 50mm @ f/1.8 should be used? Essentially, if shooting outside on sunny day, wouldn't one use f/8 (per sunny 16 rule)? If so, how is this prime superior to say a general 18-55 f/3.5 - 4.5 lens at same aperture?
Thanks

The big thing about this lens is the wide aperture. It allows you to shoot in low light situations without having to crank the ISO up, therefore keeping noise out of you image. The wide aperture also allows you to achieve a shallow depth of field, helping you separate your subject from the background.

Managed to even use this little thing at a political rally I covered yesterday!
Attention! I shoot basketball from the front row. I spend hundreds of dollars for expensive tickets. I smuggle in long, expensive cameras and lenses, and security doesn't even bat an eye. That's right. I'm special. All because I want to sell you a 50mm 1.8 lens so you can be just as cool. Have a good day.

You guys are a bad influence. Found this on Craigslist yesterday and picked it up last night. No AF since I have a d5100. Going for a hike tomorrow so I'll play around.

When i was in NYC, i was eating at a restaurant with my friend when Bill Murray passed by, took a french fry from our basket, dipped it in ketchup, ate it and said:"No ones ever going to believe you" before walking out.

Forgot I had a couple old Nikon lenses in the closet...here are some samples from my Canon T2i the old Nikkor-S 50mm f/1.4 non-AI attached (about a 50 year old lens):
The lens in use (not my photos of it):
It's incredibly sharp at f/2.0 and higher. It gets what most people describe as a soft focus effect at 1.4...but it's still sharp. This older lens is not multicoated, so apparently it has some interesting flare effects. I've yet to experience that part.
Loving the lens much more than my Canon 50mm f/1.8...though autofocus is nice![]()
