Just a quick FYI. The Passat was down about a quart so when I was at Wal Mart i looked at their oils and they didn't have anything that was VW 502 certified. Next I went to AutoZone and as I was walking over to get some Mobil 1 0w-40 (which I knew was VW 502) I passed the Syntec oils and noted that the 5w-40 had a little yellow rectangle on the front announcing that it was made especially for VW and Mercedes specs.

castrol syntec is the oil recommended by vw, it even says it on your oil cap.

Castrol gives VW money and pays for the caps. Its all about the money.

Sorry. I guess I'll have to apologize to you for my shortcomings. Some of us live in the middle of nowhere where VW 502 oils are hard to find. In addition, there are occasional posts where dubbers ask what oil to use so I thought I'd help someone out. The only oil I've ever seen in this town that was 502 certified was Mobil 1 0w-40 - and it's not easy to find. BTW, I put the FYI in the post title to that you wouldn't have to read the actual message.

Justin Perkins over in the MK V R32 forum recently posted up the latest VW approved 502, 505.01, etc. oils.

Of note was that Mobil now has TWO approved oils. The 0W-40 that we've all known about for several years and the Mobil 1 5W-40 Turbo Diesel Truck oil which Mobil says is also sold as 5W-40 Delvac. I'm not promoting Mobil or any other brand, just mentioning the 5W-40 Diesel oil because it may be easier to find for some folks. Castrol's oils in the U.S. seems to be changing formulation all the time so you never know exactly what you are getting. If it meets VW's specs for your engine you should be fine.
