Hey guys looking to replace the air filter in my car in a bit, nothing fancy.

What size K&N cone filter should I use if I'm just looking to gut the air box and put it in there?
    2.75" Diameter flange
    5" length???

for the 1.8t there is a cheap little tut in the cheap mods thread to come straight off the maf into a cone filter. Like the title states its a cheap mod and should work really well for you.

Yeah I am finding it harder and harder to look at anything on the vortex other than this thread. Ask a question and you get treated like ****.

well to do timing chains and guides they told me just to remove the trans is 8 hrs and it's $90 an hour. plus im still not positive that the chains and guides are the issue so i really don't wanna do that.

    K&n filters are oiled.
    1.8t's have sensitive maf's.
Maf's are ruined when used with oiled filters.

The car wont run very good after a while. You can do it anyway, but im the guy whos been through more than 11 mafs @ $120 each. Use whoevers advice youd like, wont hurt my feelings a bit.

Putting a cone in an airbox is the same airflow as a drop in filter. It will still be sucking air thru the same small hole.

Vr chains/guides arent much more difficult than a timing belt job. Just take your time and dig in (take pictures just in case, measure 3 times and double check all your work!

i regret not doing the chains myself and saving the money, but vorderman techs are certainly capable.

two of the main reasons i decided to have them do my chains instead of me, was a.) i didn't feel mechanically capable yet, and b.) the parts/job came with a warranty.

they ordered all the parts that are in a standard online timing chain kit, and a few extras. they also had a print out from VWoA that provided a step-by-step process to complete the job. it's a rare job because most vr's never need them done. i had a hell of a rattle that was from a broken rail - my engine fell right near the dual-rail and component change-over for reference, so it might have had a guide rail made of the older material. otherwise, vr timing chains aren't necessarily mandatory at 100k - only vortex says they are. plenty of people out there that have never done them (trixx on here has one approaching 300k and it's never been opened up).

    welcome to the layer cake

I thought you could get dry ones??? Different brand then. And I thought that might be the case, so I can just go about fixing that. and I don't expect much of any sort of gain from it, just getting that airbox out of there because I don't like it.

And what I really wanted to ask was...
If I got a 3" MAF, I would need a new turbo inlet hose to fit it, correct?

But this isnt for your car, BRO

There is a rare as piss 4ktd 5spd in GA my friend has and it needs a block. When I say rare I mean probably less than 10 were ever sent here. Figured there would be some cross referencing of blocks.

I know this is a little off forum, but any of the scrap yards up that way have a fair amount of Gen2 S10 parts or have they all been picked clean?

Anyone wanna help with CV boot or axle replacement? The Audi needs at the very minimum a CV boot at the passenger front (noticed it tonight).

Could be fun since we havnt done much wrenching lately

I gotta find out what boot kit I need due to a vin split. I may just be doing this when I take the car to chicago for some extensive wrenching next month (heater core should say it all!).

I'll let you guys know what I find out.

I was originally confused because I thought the early build cars still had the axle with a nut on the end. I was mistaken as the fronts on my car have a bolt for the axle bolt and the rears are the nut type. Got it figured out and have a boot kit en route.

    Thanks though!
