May be kind of late, but if anyone does have a plan to cruise down to Midwest Volksfest tomorrow morning, i'll be taking my b5 and my friend's bringing his mk6 gti. We'd be willing to meet up somewhere.

Chicago was fun but damn am I sore (and tired).

Left home at 6am and got to Chicago around 9am. Ran into stopped traffic about 40 miles outside of my destination but other than that no issues.

Work performed....passenger outer CV boot, rear pads and rotors, and heater core. Luckily we had a nice day for the work as we did it in a back alley outside

Heater core was interesting, but more time consuming than difficult. Im not too familiar with the interiors of these cars, but I guess I am now.

Drove 3 hours home....everything seems to be just fine. Heat is hot. I re-foamed the flaps in the heater box so that was good. Car is ready for winter use. Now I can start getting suspension parts rounded up for the spring time.

Wish i could have made it. Stopped in eastern ohio on the way back from philly to give the little guy a break.

Got my truck cleaned out (60% clean by my standards). It is free of mouse poop. I dont have any pics in my photobucket yet but ill post some when i get some free time. Ill let Brian share updates on the truck since he will know more than me.

For my next trick, i will spend way too much money on parts....again

Adam & I made a deal with a cat in Indy for two Caddys. He'd had an ad on Craigslist since March, and said cat made Adam "an offer he couldn't refuse" so home they came.

Here's the parts truck, which I affectionately call "Ol' Yaller" and Adam calls "Corn Poop":

It's an early '80 1.7l gas 5 speed, previous cat bought it on eBay for a stupid price. Had a reconditioned 0-mile head on it, but the CIS box looked like it had been stored on the shallow end of Lake Erie. Front end was really messed up:

    Interior's real choice too:

    Oops:

The rust has been repaired in this truck many, many different times, so anything that isn't surface rust is either bondo or fiberglass. The floormats are glued to the carpet in some sections, and it's the only thing holding the floorboard up.

However, the only straight piece on the truck was the tailgate. It's actually holding a secret - more later once I get some pics:

So it's getting stripped & sent off to the crusher. Anybody want the rear end for a trailer? Grab some $$$ & a sawzall & come on down!

...as for this one, you'll just have to stay tuned...

Alright, I said this tailgate wasn't what it appeared, finally took some more pics. BTW, that groovy cap was made in Kendallville

If anybody's ever used them as a ramp to put a motorcycle in the bed, then the tailgate will more closely resemble a potato chip than a tailgate.

Anyway, somebody decided early on that this tailgate needed a little more "structural support", so they welded two thick steel plates to the inside of the straight original gate:

The welds look suspiciously like those that Bubba BuzzWelder used to repair the front of my truck, must have been kinfolk. Note also that this tailgate has three different previous colors, and NONE of them were a match to the Yaller truck's original paint:

The access holes for the gate handle release weren't even close, but a little work with the Dremel fixed that issue:

Here's the best part - someone decided to beef up the upper part of the gate by cutting open one end & stuffing a length of threaded steel pipe thru the top of the gate:

The plan is to correct the awful original welds, grind it down & get some paint on it so it ain't so tetnus-friendly. It weighs twice what the original gate did & should put up to far more abuse I was happy to find a straight, unrusted tailgate & even happier to discover these mods, no matter how badly it's been hacked together

Paint was $128 a gallon. I sprayed it myself in my garage. It was single stage paint. I will be painting the Jetta with a 2 stage paint process.

Since it's 04VWGTITURBO's project car/truck/caddy/whatever, I'll use his DIY template

"How To Remove The Motor and Trans From a MK1"

Step 1) Put offending MK1 of choice on lift:

Step 2) Remove a couple bolts, some parts, pull some hoses and wires:

Step 3) Support dead motor with motorcycle jack, raise MK1, pull dead motor & trans out from underneath:

Step 4) Shed a tear for the poor, recently rebuilt 1.6D with a siezed piston in cylinder #1 (remember kids, don't overfill your motor by 4 or 5 extra quarts ):

Step 5) Find a crack through the front core support that flexes when you remove the front motor mount cup, add one more thing to the list of items that need to be fixed before the motor goes back in :

Tune in next week when we tear down the motor, should be fun

    Now that looks like fun.

How easy would trans/diff/motor mounts be with a lift...hmmmm

I'm getting really spoiled by lifts, I don't want to do anything on the floor anymore

The alignment rack is becoming my favorite new tool this year. I'm finally getting the hang of it

Here's a good example. Somehow, Byler stumbled blindly into this nice '92 VR6 Corrado with a couple of issues, including a very loose exhaust connection right after the cat. Here we are welding it up (good luck getting it off now, sucker ):

Next, I put it up on the alignment rack. Once I put the reflectors on all 4 wheels & fire up the computer, I do a couple quick tests (roll car back & forth a bit, turn wheel right & left & return to center) I get a visual readout of what's out of whack. This rack also lifts to full height & has two additional sets of frame jacks built into the ramps to lift the car off the wheels if need be. Here's the Corrado all set up:

Any of the arrows that point into red are off, green is good to go:

Lift the car & cameras up a bit & adjust the surface-rusted threaded bits. After some hot wrench & BFH attention, I got it pretty damned perfect:

Coming up - 04VWGTITURBO and buzbomb go visit mechanicaldiesel, and a new DIY for MK4 VR6 timing chains, guides & a valvetrain surprise

You guys have been really busy lately
Makes me feel a little lazy, but I'm more lacking parts than anything...
    Keep up the good work

On a side note: we have a group together and are going for a cruise Saturday the 15th at about 5:30 I believe, I'll update when (exactly) and where when I know.

Lots of goodies coming this week. The first are H&R springs! I get to spend alllll winter accumulating parts for a suspension overhaul that will take place in the spring. The fronts on these cars are nice as they are a 2 piece design, but I plan on doing everything (wheel bearings, ball joints, tie rod ends/tie rod assemblies in the rear), the whole she-bang. Not sure what shocks Im gonna go with yet but leaning towards Bilstein Sports. If anyone has shock suggestions (no, not coilovers) feel free to toss em out. Ive heard good/bad things about both Bilstein and Koni's.
