Thread: TAIL OF THE DRAGON-----------> APRIL 5-6 2008, Its TIME to Cross The Line AGAIN!!!!!!

  1. 01-11-2008 11:45 AM #1
This is an R32 event but we invite all to join us !!!!

I really look forward to meet all of you again, and to welcome new people to this years run at the Tail of the Dragon in Robbinsville, NC!!!

After last years success with a great turnout of 47 cars i felt that we had no other choice but to do it again this year, honestly i almost didn't want to do it over and was looking for other trips to do on the East coast, but with its central location along our coast this is still the best event (imo) that could be done.

The Tail of the Dragon is an interesting mix of very spirited driving, beautiful panoramic views and a great opportunity to meet other R32 owners.

    When: April 5-6 2008

    where: Robbinsville, NC

    What
The Tail of the Dragon at Deals Gap, with 318 curves in 11 miles, is America’s number one motorcycle and sports car road. The nearby Cherohala Skyway is quickly becoming number two with its remote 60 miles of scenic mountain highway. The area also has other roads less traveled, but just as exciting.

    The Dragons Tail.

We will be staying at the http://www.tapocolodge.com... Tapoco Lodge is FULL!!!!!

    Call here for additional rooms,

Official sponsors for this years TOD

I`m very happy with these sponsors, i find it important that they are more then a company that is willing to just trow us some $ for shirts... but they are people that are really involved with the VW/R32 community, all of them are truly stand up companies that are there to work with us and help in any way possible to make this a great event.

Thanks in advance for your support

This is it, the countdown to the 2008 Tail of the Dragon run has reached 7 days….

In order to let everything go as smoothly as possible i would like to ask all of you to please read everything carefully… whoever asks me one question about any info mentioned in this post will not get a goodiebag

First of all I want to thank all of you for attending this years event, thanks to all the sponsors without all of you this wouldn’t be nearly as fun.

    So on to business…

    Car preparation:

Make sure you car is in top mechanical condition, this is a pretty far trip and a lot can happen, besides that the TOD is a vey damading road, I would say it’s a trackday times 10. Very hard on brakes, tires and you the driver ... I`m not even going to start to scare passengers!

Try to get a 2 way radio, this will be very helpfull for the trip down as for when we are in NC, it’s a very rural area with no cell phone signal!

Bring a camera, video camera … the area is beautifull and you will want to take some memories home with you.

Cartags will be handed out to you, when you meet up with the group look for me and ask your tag.
This is what you`ll get. http://i104.photobucket.com/al...T.jpg

You have to fill this in and stick it on your car, preferably on your rear driverside window.
This is how you should fill it in. http://i104.photobucket.com/al...g.jpg
You can either do this with a sharpie or invest $3-4 and go to staples and pick up some 1” high vinyl letters.

Bring your front license plate and zipties, the police has been pretty actif at TOD, if we get pulled over we might be able to avoid some tickets.

For the people joining us on the trip down starting in NYC

We have a pretty big group of people driving down this year, estimate 25-30 cars after our final meetup in WV.
To make shure this all goes smoothly and without to much stress for everybody I would like to ask all of you to keep some tips in mind.

Make sure that your car is fully filled up when you meet up with us at a meeting spot, the cars that are driving to this spot will have to fill up also and if we need to wait for 20 plus cars to fill up it could take a while.
Fill up at every stop regardless if your tank is half empty or only ¼.

Use the restrooms at every stop, this especially counts for all the ladies!!!!!!!

Try to signal ahead of every lane change, let people know what you want to do, dont flip on your blinker and fly in the other lane.

If by any chance you have to stop for any reason beside a mechanical issue, the group will continue and you will have to catch up.

We drive over a fairly long distance if you break away from the group because of traffic don’t panic right away, you will most likely catch up pretty quick.

We will not drive down to fast, I know a lot will say “yeah yeah Edwin will be the first to speed of” … well your going to be wrong then, I understand that this year the group is to big with to many people that are not familiar with eachothers driving style so we have to keep it within reason to avoid any incidents.
I just want to ask that you understand that you cant drive 55mph all the way down, if you want to do this then your welcome to do so and we`ll see you either at the hotel in VA or in NC.

Keep your eyes open for police, even if we are not breaking any laws we will still stand out and they could see the chance to write a lot of tickets for stupid reasons.
If we get pulled over be so smart to hide all video equipment ASAP without drawing to much attention.
Don’t tell then where we are going, if they ask were on our way to Disneyland in a way we are…. No serious tell them we are going to Memphis, we don’t want a police escort all the way to Robbinsville.

At the Tail of the Dragon

Have a look at the schedule and try to keep yourself to it, again use all the stops we do to fill up your car and empty yourself, there are not a lot of gas stations in the area so you`ll need it.

9.30 AM meet at the Tapoco lodge, all goodie bags will be handed out at this time.

10 AM Head out to do the Big loop Run 3.5 hrs 118miles.

On The Tail of the Dragon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Last year we got a little bit to excited when we were down there, we had fun, we were very lucky it all went incident free but it was actually pretty crazy.

I have to ask everybody to try to stay on their side of the double yellow line, meaning on the righthand side

If I hear from anybody that somebody is driving to crazy and doesn’t care about the line crossing I will have to ask you to leave the rest of the group. I don’t want to sound like a bitch here, its for your and everybody elses safety.

If you feel that the group is driving to fast and you have problems to keep up with the pace, don’t feel bad, this is a very demanding road that will tire even the most experienced drivers 318 turns is a lot in 11 miles!!!
Stick your hand out of the window and signal to the car behind you that you want to slow down and wait till you reach the next turnof, park your car get out and take a couple breaths of fresh air and continue to have relaxed fun, we will be waiting for you at the other end of the dragon.

Usefull information adviced to print out!

    I'm in. Cannot wait

Anyone crossing Nashville TN should contact me. I'm putting together a Convoy from Nashville to Robbinsville via some pretty good country roads. I've worked all over these areas and know some pretty good roads to the location. Plus TN has some of the best maintained roads in the US.

After I see the interest in this I'll make a post for others to follow if they want.

Thanks putting this together Edwin. I'll have you a Heini Keg, but you will need to let it settle the first night

Just a warning, watch out down there. Local law enforcement has really stepped up on that road.

Is this strictly for R32's? I noticed there is an Mcoupe that might be attending. I was wondering if I could come run it in my GTI.

I've attended quite a few R32 runs up in Bear Mtn New York in the past...

I`m aware of this, in the summer time its not a good idea to go there, to much other traffic and police of course, check out this video from the riot the THP did there last Aug. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...lated

Now check out some of the video`s from when we where there... compare the amount of traffic !!!
