Thread: VWvortex Feature: Runnin' Down a Dream—Cross-Country in a Golf R32

    1. 01-21-2008 06:11 PM #1

VWvortex member Kevin Sterling, also known as LKR32, stopped by our Chicago offices in September 2007 during the home stretch of his six-week road trip. When he told us about his experience driving his R32 across the country, and the influence of the VWvortex community, we knew we had to share the tale.
      Part One...

South Florida to San Francisco in January 05'. Put it in 6th gear, Cruise Control set at 70-75, only took 3 1/2 days. This was the southern route across the country. Vast stretches of nothingness. The R purred across the country with ease. The Konig seats were actually quite comfortable for 4-5 hour stretches between food, gas and pee pee breaks. Never realized how much stuff you can safely cram into the R if you do the math right!

Thanks everyone It was def a fun trip I will always remember. The R32 community really is what made the trip, i have to thank everyone who was apart of it. I hope everyone enjoys. I never thought my trip would have turned out this great. I remember i was just getting ready to leave and was so unsure at how it may go. But everything was smooth as butter and i had fun the entire time. I wish i was back on the open road, I really cant wait for the TOD GTG in April, i want to drive again.

Wish that I could do a trip like that now that I am old enough to appreciate it. Glad to see you were able to make the most out of it.

Fantastic story. I remember reading the updates and comparing them with my own experiences driving the .:R cross-country.

Very nice. I actually came out to PA from the Oregon coast in a $950 1997 VW Fox... without air conditioning... in August. It would be a delight to do it over again in the .:R (although I must say that Foxy didn't miss a beat). Kudos to you, Kevin, for taking the d(r)ive!
