I had an 8v cam sitting around..and I thought it would be cool to make a lampstand! It's out of my old MkIV 2.0 Jetta:

I brought it to a gun-drilling place to have the inside bored out. Then to a machine shop to have it welded to the rotor (which is from an older Passat)

I really love it and I might make another one

Tsk, rotor should have been painted red.

  3. 02-07-2008 04:40 PM #3
looks good but I woulda cleaned the rust off the rotor before putting it in my house.

Very nice! I remember when you were asking around about where to get it drilled out. Glad to see you got it worked out. I like it a lot!

Cam looks great as a lamp post , the ratty, rusty rotor looks ****ty.

  13. 02-07-2008 04:50 PM #14
I probably would have media blasted and clear coated the rotor and cam.

I like that you kept the rust on there, it really does give it more character.

I suggest putting a wire wheel to the rotor and then Slapping a coat of clear on the whole assembly. Reminds me of my old BMX days and when the "raw" look came out for the frame finishes...

The lamp shade even looks like a cone filter! I absolutely love it. The rust is a little ratty, but its cool because you can tell its authentic and used, and not bought at a store.

It would be sick if you made rim coffee and end tables to match!

Very nice! I really like it.

Word of warning tho... I'd ground the metal - just in case the metal wears thru the insulation of the wiring at some point (not a concern with a wood or porcelain lamp since they don't conduct)... I know of a couple people who've gotten shocks from metal lamps or light fixtures and faulty wiring. If you can't find a practical way to do it - run the wires inside a protective sleeve that extends past where they come out of the lamp and up to the light fixture.

That lamp is cool as hell. It needs a different lamp shade though.

Agree. I've got a 350 chevy cam and a pressure plate from a 3500 5-spd, this makes me want to do that.
