Nah you don't need FWD. I was driving my mom's Tacoma and accidentally knocked the transfer case into 2WD. The ass end backs out if you give it any power but with brand new tires (Albeit they were all-seasons) I didn't get stuck once. 4WD is a whole new beast though, I couldn't break the tires loose in 2nd but that might be because it's a 4 cylinder pickup.
