I've read the DIY's on the cam follower check... but my question is: What is the goal of the maintenance? To simply lube the cam follower? What would the cam follower look like if it went "bad"...?

The goal of that check is to make sure your follower has failed or isn't going to and/or replace it.
There is a black coating on the contact surface that will wear down and eventually fail

When the follower starts to lose some or all of that black coating, I swap it out for a new one. ~$40.

Which downpipe? And just the downpipe? Or did you install a catback? My downpipe mates to my stock catback. It's quiet at normal driving, but when I get on it, it's get a slight tone not loud though... Also I noticed the added power right away (pre-reflash to stage 2+), def moved and spooled better, but I also did my HPFP at the same time. Hands down best bang for my buck

But this isn't always the case.... If you keep oil in the motor like you should and regular oil changes and on time maintainence, you can get more miles out of the cam follower. I didn't replace mine until 90,000 miles and it was still in useable condition and would've lasted another 20,000 miles or so. I changed it because I was preparing for a cross country move so I replaced it anyways. (mine is an 06 FSI btw)

Thanks to el bobbo and nmyGLI for some clarification around the cam follower. Makes more sense now.

Does driving style impact the wear and tear on the cam follower? I'm guessing it does. Next question, and last, is checking that part EVER a point on any routine dealer maintenance? I'm guessing no, but maybe they're smart enough to check it out... all you have to do is pop off the fuel pump...

guhhh. better scuffed than cracked i suppose. i gotta find somebody that isn't trying to push me out the door with ridiculous prices, i could get an entire paint job for the numbers this guy threw at me.
a simple "if we aren't doing the body work, it isn't worth our time" would have sufficed.

Of course driving style will impact it but it's more of over all factors kinda lead to it. Regarding dealer maintainence, no its not part of it but you can tell them you want to have it done but it's pricey because there are steps to take when removing the pump and putting it back on. I can't remember exact number but I think I was quoted 200. I just looked up a DIY and did it myself. Now the big question is, if you have a banjo bolt on yours. What year is yours?

Edit:: just saw that you have an 09, so you have a TSI correct? I thought the TSI motor doesn't have the cam follower, just the FSI motor? Yes? No?

I am going to wait for it...3 years as a matter of fact. My MKV will be my wife's commuter ride for the next 3 years of Nursing school. The coilovers are in the garage, in hibernation, until nursing school is over, then they get to come back out to play.

(I know, you're still going to say LOWER IT! MORE!)
