I just got a ticket for having window tint. Officer wrote down that it is a traffic violation, which will go on my record. I thought window tint was a non-traffic violation? i got pulled over in Renton, near the Brown Bear Car Wash.

The officer said he pulled me over because me exhaust was over the legal decibel level, and my tint was too dark.

BTW, this is my first ticket!!!!! I don't want it to go on my driving record!

anyone else recently got a ticket for their window tint?

i just want to make something clear. I don't think the officer was a punk by giving me a ticket. I DO think he could have let me off with a warning, but he was just doing his job. FWIW, he mentioned that in the city of renton there are 128 officers of which 2 are designated for vehicle equipment violations. so its understandable that the majority of people have not gotten tickets for this.

I'd fight the exhaust at least. What did he use to prove the exhaust was over legal decibel levels? Did he have a decibel meter in the car with him? I doubt that very much.

ive dealt with this kind of thing before and the judge said pretty much anything they pull you over for WHILE you are driving is a traffic violation, the only way it wouldnt have been is if like he got you while you were parked or something

I don't know about Washington, but here in Oregon I got a ticket in my old Jetta for window tint. 5%. We took it off, brought the car in and they dropped the ticket. Just a $35 admin charge..

Call the number on the ticket and ask if you can do this.

But like I said, I'm in Oregon.

      Renton Cops

      I'll qualify my statement.

I got pulled over and given a ticket for unbuckling my seatbelt while STOPPED at a traffic light. The motorcycle cop was right behind me when I unbuckled, pulled my phone out of my front pocket to charge it, and buckled back up before the light changed. Judge wouldn't give me a break, other than deferring the ticket.

      still makes me mad.

Thats exactly what the officer said. he said that in the city of renton, there were 128 officers and 2 were designated for giving out vehicle equipment violations. Just my luck. oh well.

So does anyone know the answer to my question? i thought window tinting was a non-traffic violation.

Be patient, you'll soon get a book and references to read from the regulars. More than you'll know what to do with.

that is crazy luck.... . i'm thinking since its a violation of vehicle equipment then its a traffic violation.

I will fight my urge to "bash", but I will say that blanket statements like this will get you nowhere. I can think of one state trooper, on this forum no less, who in fact is about as cool of a cop as you can get until you try to be a smart ass know it all.

      Food for thought.

If you know your tint is to dark, you knew it was to dark when you got it, and knew there was a chance of getting a ticket... Its part of having something that is illegal. Now being a traffic violation, probably not... But it is a saftey violation, and they dont need a reason to pull you over for that, its kind of like having a head light or a tail light out.

I got a ticket in Renton for parking in a firelane overnight. He wrote it as a traffic violation which makes absolutely no sense; should be a non traffic violation. Fighting it next week.

keithjones, you parked in a firelane! WTF? Lucky there wasnt a fire or you would be crying about broken windows on your car to save peoples lives. Really? Just pay the ticket. You screwed up and could have cost people their lives!

Op, just verify calibration on the test equipment and ask for discovery. If I was in charge, I would speculate that it was a moving violation as it can inhibit your ability to see at night.

      food for thought.

I got window tint violations in AZ and CA while driving back and forth from Phoenix to Rancho and that infraction does NOT go on your record. The cop measured 3% of light through my driver side window.
I paid a $10 fine, removed the tint and signed a paper the court sent me, saying I removed the tint. If I refused to remove the tint, it would have been a $130 fine.

Hahhaha, funny thing. The fire lane was in the back of some apartments in the middle of nowhere (about 20 minutes from any main road), and there were also three other cars parked in the fire lane too. What a cop was doing back there, I've no idea.

And hell, if there was a fire, I'd be more than happy for the fire truck to just plow my car over. PLEASE.

      Why are they

      11% is illegal!

Why do people get pissed because cops give tickets for what is illegal?????

Bottom line, you want to break the law, don't cry when you get busted!

30% is the legal limit in the state of WA.

I say just go to court and get it reduced as this is your first ticket. Get tint changed.

      Good luck!

fire lanes arent designated by the apartment owner or even the building planner. they are designated by the city/county/region or whatever.

How much time does it take for a firetruck to move your car or put a hole in it to enable a mission? probably more time than it would take if your car wasnt there.

The arguement of "johnny's mom lets him do this, why cant I?" doesnt really fly in real life. Johnny's mom is probably a loser.

What a cop was doing back there, no idea

Sorry Pimpin, Parking in a "emergency" lane IS a traffic violation, because you are jeopardizing the safety of people by compromising the vehicles position....Well thats what I was told anyways. I got away with a warning though.

What really is the lowest you can go without getting in trouble for tint?(Other than the legal 30%). I'm about to get 20% in the back on 35% on my front windows. I shouldn't really get in trouble for that, right? Thanks guys

Probably someone was concerned about their safety, had there really been a fire. I would call it in if there were one car, let alone four cars....thats a lot of work for the firefighters get around, or move cars out of the way.

Next time, dont endanger people's lives just so you dont have to walk as far.
