    1. 03-22-2008 08:10 PM #1
My automatic transmission in 2001 Jetta is not shifting. I went today to a car wash, came home , and after two hours was trying to go to my friends. I can't put my transmision on R, D, NOTHING.!!! It got stuck! Could someone please tell me what is the problem? What should I do?

There is a thing that releases a lock on the shift lever when you press the brakes. Maybe there's something wrong with it. Have a look at the brake pedal.

I have an 02 Jetta 2.0 liter and the tranny seems to slip once in a while even after the trany fluid change, but I have heard of that before here while in Germany where when u have to apply the brake when you put it in gear, it could have frozen brakes if you just came back from a car wash with it! I try not to wash it on cold days here even though it seems to rain almost every day anyway!
      Have an Über day!

You need a new brake light switch.
This switch besides lighting up the tails, is also used for the shift lock solenoid.

I don't have an answer for you but I can tell you that your not alone. My daughter has a 2002 vw jetta with a tiptonic tranny and it did the same thing and everyone is saying that she needs a new tranny and those things aren't cheap. We're talking anywheres from 2800 to 5000. If you get an answer from someone could you let us know. Maybe it's the same thing. Good luck

      For starters:
Since you said you went to the car wash...make sure that your TCM is not getting wet.
Have someone with a VAG COM check the TCM for codes.
Get the brake light switch changed....it's done for free at any VW dealership.
