Yeah, I think Brennen was the most excited about my cleaning them up.

If anyone is available and down to come help me out Tomorrow(sunday) hit me up I could use some extra hands getting this thing in. If no one comes to help I guess I'll ponder about doing a wire tuck and other small stuff, until I work up the energy to try and put this thing in by myself.

Already in thanks though. I'm getting it buttoned up right now, just mounted the battery under the dash, about to put on some music and wire it, along with the egt gauge, oil temp gauge, and boost gauge..
I might get out tonight and do some breaking in.. tomorrow for sure I will be working on it / driving it around.. Might spray my dash and inbetween coats drive around, and make sure all is good, and get the piston rings seated.

Gotta admit, thats a spiffy lookin engine and a spiffy lookin engine bay.
#19311
yea then life happens lol this is with everything hooked up and hoses ran.
not going to get to drive it tonight, I need a cork to cap off the crackpipe where the overflow tank went before, so I'm going to go drink a bottle of makers mark and come back tomorrow.
I did get to crank it over a bunch (disconnected the injection pump wire) to get some oil flowing and get things lubed up. Battery dead now though so its on the charge.

It wouldnt be hard to take an electric motor and flywheel from an old treadmill and modify it to work as a tool to turn over a motor slowly to move oil through before running it the first time. I might just do that with the one I have laying around or go with the electric cart / party cooler I've been toying with.

I did a lot of cranking today, there should be plenty of oil flowing. Fired up and ran really rough. I cut it off and tried re timing it. When I got back to tdc the gauge was reading 1.40 I think. I tried to loosen the pump, and start it up to see if I could rotate the pump until it ran smooth, but it's no that easy. So I re-timed it again, set it at 1.03mm. Started up ran rough for like 2 min, I shut the hood to drive it and it cut itself off. Noticed that the fuel line had gone dry. Primed that again, and cranked and cranked and cranked. Did I mention that the small battery I have is not going to cut it.. Maybe when it runs great and starts right up every time, but it will only crank the diesel over for about 20 seconds before its useless and needs a charge.
If the timing is good and there are other issues what could they be??
1:Head gasket wrong? I got a 3 notch to be safe, but when I measured there were a bunch of numbers and I went with the highest.
2:Compression just low because the rings have not yet seated?
3:something in the head not right? It did not smoke a bunch just when it started up.
4: bad injector, or leaky pump? I had the same injectors and pump on my other 4dr as well as the 1.6 that was previously in this car and they were fine then?
At one time Paul M. and I had the battery tender on the small battery, a regular gasser battery under the hood hooked up with jumper cables, another set of jumper cables routed through the hatch to the small battery, and another set of cables to make some better grounds. It was a crazy setup, I thought for sure it was going to end in a fire.
So to start, I'm going to re-time the engine fully, not just the pump as before. Looking at the marks the pump could be a bit off. It's hard to turn the crank by hand and watch for timing marks by yourself lol. Anyone available please come help out tomorrow. I have work at 8pm, and if nothing else I have to push the rabbit in the yard to clear the garage up. Hit me up 757-541-7377. I need a new battery too, so we'll see.

Judging by the way it cranked over I don't think compression is low. It was killing your battery if compression was way low it would have never fired. I think you need to retime everything, crank to cam, and fuel pump. Then try with a new fully charged battery.

Anyone in the area have experience with the mk1 1.6 diesel motor? the one in my rabbit is in bad shape, I'd like to try to save it, but might just end up doing a TDI swap![]()
