Strange noise when I open the door.

I heard this noise on my mkIV GTI as well. When I unlock and open the car in the AM I hear a strange “whurring” sound. It sounds like a cell phone vibrating on a hard surface. I don’t think anything is broken since it has done this on two different cars. I just want to know what it is. The sound happens as soon as I open the driver-side door.

okok... i'll be the first to say that you can search and find this answer and many on this site. it's a veritable knowledgebase of factoids.

the sound is the fuel pump priming and is normal.

Thanks. Doing a search for a "strange noise" did not turn up any answers. That sounds right if the fuel pump is in the back of the car.

Aren't we as humans a strange bunch of animals, we LOVE the sound of the R32 at WOT, we hate the squeaks from the engine spun trim on the doors, and we wonder about the whirring and pinning sound that our fuel pumps make.

It might be a VW conspiracy, some good, some bad, some ugly - it just keeps life interesting.
