No it’s not the World’s strongest man, tallest woman or heaviest baby! It’s the Peugeot 308 HDi 110, which has just secured its place in the 2009 Guinness Book of Records. Driving around the coast of Australia in a standard Peugeot 308 HDi 110, John and Helen Taylor have set two new world records.
The intrepid husband and wife team drove a completely standard Peugeot 308 HDi 110 hatchback on a 25 day, 9,000 mile journey around the coast of Australia. During the record breaking journey they broke two world records by recording an unprecedented 1192 miles on just 60 litres of diesel fuel and an average fuel consumption of 90.75 mpg.

The Peugeot 308 HDi 110 hatchback now holds the World Record for both the highest average fuel consumption on a journey, a record previously held by a Peugeot 307 hatchback, and the record for the furthest distance travelled on a full tank of fuel.

John Taylor, one half of the economical driving duo explained the unusual journey: “We were very aware of the strong environmental credentials of the 308 before we set out on this journey; but we had no idea, however, that it would be such a record breaker. For us, the Peugeot 308 is the perfect family car; it can comfortably seat five adults and during our 25 day trip, the boot space proved itself too, swallowing up all of our necessary luggage.”

Pierre Louis Colin, Managing Director, Peugeot UK said, “The feat performed by John and his wife, Helen, in the 308 is outstanding. It proves the difference that driving economically can make on both the environment and with the rising cost of fuel, your pocket.”

The Peugeot 308 is available with a range of fuel efficient engines, including the HDi 90 and 110* bhp diesel models which also have CO2 emissions of only 120 g/km. This reduces the vehicle’s excise duty to only £35.00 and with combined fuel consumption of 62.7 mpg also reduces everyday running costs.

The setting of these records also comes hot on the heels of the UK economy-run success, where the 308 HDi 110 achieved an average fuel consumption of
71.92 mpg, a 15% increase on its listed fuel economy figure, during the 2007 Fleet World MPG Marathon. The 308 HDi 90 also claimed an economical accolade at the beginning of 2008, travelling 117 miles around London’s Orbital, the M25 on less that £10 of diesel fuel.

    World Record Attempt 2008:

The record attempt was completed in a standard, Peugeot 308 HDi 110 by John and Helen Taylor in April 2008. It was verified by an independent scrutineer to ensure all the requirements of the Guinness World Records’ regulations were met and all stipulations for setting the record were followed. In particular, nothing at all was removed from the car to save weight in order to save fuel. Indeed, along with Helen and John were their two large suitcases with clothes for the entire 25 day trip.

The gas attendants of Australia were probably thrilled to not have to see that ugly thing at the gas station particularly frequently.

My God, that thing is FUGLY!!!

    And that front overhang...

I had never complained about overhang, until Peugeot came out with the 407 and that abomination, the overhang is extremely long, so long it confuses you when you see one of those moving.

Oh, sorry! How could I forget this is the CL and that the 308 is not sold in the US! It's the best car EVAR!!! I would buy one tomorrow!!!

I think it's 75mpg US. That's about 120 galUS of fuel, about $550USD at current US prices, to circumnavigate Australia in 25 days - not bad!

+1. People drive Honda Fit's for gas mileage, and they're uglier than this. If I was getting this kind of mileage from the Peugeot, I wouldn't care what it looked like.

And even if it's only [Can we really say that with meaning? ] 75mpg, that's extremely good.

It may not be the most attractive-looking car, but I don't find the looks offensive. The 308 still looks better than a Prius, IMO.

And in addition to the outstanding MPG, the interior is quite nice:

The 308 HDi 110 would make a great daily driver, especially the wagon version.

I just checked, BTW, and the VW Golf BlueMotion TDI's average EU consumption is 4.5 l/100 km, whereas the 308's is 4.9 l for the manual and 4.6 l for the automatic. So in theory at least the Golf should do even better.

    God I hate these cars,

They're built worse than US cars

Their engines fall to bits by a 100k.

I guess a 206 is a decent car, for example, but one of the weirdest new cars I've ever driven was a 407. Even things easy to do right like the gas pedal travel was weird. Even the pull handle for closing the trunk lid was on the wrong side for a right-handed person like me. Little things like that make me stay in VAG products.

The 308 is the size of a Golf/Rabbit, the 207 is the Yaris competitor.

Little do you guys realise but Peugeot is a leader in vehicle styling design. Todays Peugeot is your Fords and GMs 5-10 yrs down the track.

    13 yr old Peugeot design.

If I can predict the future, ugly ain't ever gonna be the new beautiful. The prev. gen. Peugeots, the 406 and the 206 were beautiful cars in the conventional way. These new Peugeots, the 207, 407 and 308 are opinion-splitting to say the least.

While it's still a pretty fresh looking car, you posted the facelift, though.

I'd take a 207 GTI any day. I see them from time to time and they look like a ton of fun to drive.

Anyway, that is quite impressive mileage, if only American manufacturers would take a hint...

This is interesting as there are folks with B4Vs that can break 1200 miles pretty easily and a few with A4s.

    Modified, however.

(Ventectomy counts as a modification. Hell, it's even a modification of an emissions control AND a safety device, even though it's one that doesn't actually DO anything on a diesel.)
