    Thread: After market navigation

    1. 06-09-2008 09:49 PM #1
Hey guys I have a 2006 a3 and I am looking to get a after market in-dash navigation system. I know it is not a double din. So what would work? Do any of you have an after market nav installed? Any feedback or pictures would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I got the garmin nuvi and picked up a custom mount that works really well in the A3. Details here:

You could always do a flip-out. I'm not the biggest fan though, I think they look tacky and they always block your vents.

You can also get the parts to do a double-DIN conversion, but it's a little pricey. You will need the cage and also new buttons and an AC unit (or trim yours if you're brave!)

ya im not gonna do a flip out it does look really tacky. I went to a car audio place today and asked them if they could install a pioneer avic d3 double din and I said price is not really an issue an he said he wouldnt do it because it wouldnt work. he said I could only do a single din but im not sure

As far as that audio shop goes. For most single din cars you cannot go double, HOWEVER. As said above if you order enough parts you can convert your dash to a double din. You just have to order all the bits and find a place you trust to do the install.

Kevin what are you talking about, you know very well that Single Din to Double din is VERY doable on the A3s, and has been done before or did you forget??

I personally did it over a year and a half ago, best mod to date. i run the Alpine IVA-W200, with full speed I-Pod connection and Alpine full integrated Black Bird Nav. All controls are through the touch screen never touching the ipod or Nav units themselves.

Here is a Detailed DIY with pictures outlining the conversion, as well as the Ipod install. Includes all Part numbers and CAD retail pricing from nearly 2 years ago. US cars will require the passenger air bag button as suppose to a second blank.

      Link to my DIY

If you lived in FL I'd do it for a case of beer.

I might be selling my car and if I do, I have a complete single DIN to double DIN factory Navigation kit available. I've used it for over a year and a half and have no problems. No one can ever tell that I installed it myself.

I'm looking to get $1500 plus a swap of your AC unit for it. LMK if your interested.
