First thought is to go get a canine good citizen certification. At the very least, it'll be something formal to say "see, my dog is a good dog".

Second thought is just to say that he's some sort of mutt. You gotta do what you gotta do. Did you adopt him or buy him? Do you know for sure he isn't a mix at all?

My only experience is with homeowner's, not renting. Our homeowner's informed us they were not going to renew our policy when we added my pit to the insurance. We called and asked if there was anything they could do --- could we have her evaluated, etc. Evaluator came out, informed us that there was no way she was a pure bred pit, and that he was reporting to the insurance company that she was a "well behaved terrier mix".

Now, I would never call my insurance company and outright lie. But I wasn't going to argue with the guy and tell him he was wrong, and that we're sure 100% positive she's a pure bred pit b/c she was taken from a fighting dog bust We just smiled and nodded and thanked him for his time and our insurance rates stayed the same!

I'm sure he could pass the good citizen test with flying colors. That will definitely be something I'll do.

I got him from a lady who had an "accident litter". I had been trying to adopt from shelters but their policies are ridiculously strict. I met both the parents who looked like they were pure, but who knows. For all I know the mom could have had something else in her, since they had found her originally in an abandoned shed with bite marks on her body. The dad was bought from a show breeder.

Now if I were to get approval for a rental, and they were to look at him, would they also want to check vet records to see what breed he is? I'm getting him neutered and licensed before I move, would that be enough "proof"?

Can you have the vet just put "mixed breed" on there when you get him neutered? Or bulldog or boxer mix or something? Or anything that isn't pit bull? If you had it in writing that he was something else, then it sounds like it wouldn't be an issue, no? And if you told people he was a boxer-lab mix, I doubt you'd get much push back. People really have no idea what pits look like ---- to most people, a pit bull is a large mean looking dog with a boxy face. People often refuse to believe ours is a pit, even though she looks exactly like what a game bred pit is supposed to look like. She looks pretty close to this dog, which is the 'standard':

Only asking about the buying/adopting thing b/c it'd be easier to honestly say "I have no idea what he is" if you just got him at a shelter and really didn't know the parents. We fostered a "pit mix" once who I highly doubt had any pit in him. Mine on the right (see the similarity to the pic above), the 'pit mix' we fostered on the left. People were more likely to believe the one on the left was the pit when we'd take them out.

The big thing with landlords or rental companies is just their insurance. Their insurance says "no pit bulls". They're not going to DNA test your dog if you say it's something else. And if you have a vet record in writing saying it's not a pit, I can't imagine it really being an issue. Just make sure to lie to all your neighbors too

This is true. I've seen bully breeds and dogs that are part if not all of some sort of mastiff labeled as pit bulls. I don't get it, but hey, it helps my situation in this case.

I'll start looking into what breed I can pass him off as that won't be an issue with insurance companies. I think American bulldog or boxer mix would be the most believable. A lot of people wonder about him anyway because of his coat pattern.

I live in Long Beach, there are dog parks around that have no restrictions.

If it was the pit perhaps fellow owners should give tips on how to help the owner train the dog. As opposed to saying how people always overreact when pits fight. lol
Where did I say anyone overreacted in his specific situation? I wasn't there, I have no idea what happened. I said they aren't easy dogs to own as every single thing they do is over-analyzed by the general public. I also said I'm trying to train every ounce of dominant behavior out of my personal dog, even though she's an angel compared to the majority of dogs she encounters.

Agreed, the muzzle reinforces the already horrible stereotypes. If you don't trust your dog, they shouldn't be in situations where they can become a problem.

4 days of boarding and she barely made it 5 minutes before passing out in the car.

my lab on the other hand was bouncing around the car squealing and panting for the 2 hours it took us to go pick up the GFs dog from her parents and get home. It was so bad we had to move all the luggage from the trunk to the back seat and put her in the hatch.

Chet doesn't have a speck of any other color on him besides brown. I definitely think he's got some Lab in him as well (I think it's that insane Lab hyperactivity).
