The three words that I would offer any person interested in the complete restoration and modification of a vintage vehicle like this one are patience, finance, and, of course, persistence. While the relative low cost of entry of the first generation of VW watercooled cars is very enticing, the real costs will emerge when you consider the time that you have to dedicate to a project like this to see it to fruition. FULL STORY...

Proof for those that falsley think that they can a $500 rat trap into a nice quality MK1 for a couple grand.
"...make a list of their goals, build out a cost structure, and once they arrive at a figure, to consider that to be about 50 to 60 percent of what they will ultimately spend..."
      Words of wisdom.

I'll say it again, Paul ; awesomely done Scirocco &
this is the car that inspired me me start my project..

Honestly, I believe this car is probably the nicest built Scirocco I in North America. I was sorry to hear Paul say he was considering parting ways with it.

Nice job Paul. I heart this car.

Thanks for the kind words Eric (and everyone else for that matter). This car was a labor of love for me for several years and in many ways re-affirmed my passion for the Mk1 chassis cars which I feel were revolutionary vehicles that brought many people into the VW fold when aircooled cars were going away and watercooled cars replaced them.

I remember many fond times in the mid to late 80's receiving catalogs from Autotech, APS (Neuspeed) and others and literally memorizing the subsections and in my mind building the dream car that I wanted to build. Obviously much time has passed since then and those catalogs are now replaced with forums like these where enthusiasts gather and exchange ideas so really what we "early" enthusiasts had at the time was in many ways expanded into something that is much more dynamic and ever-changing.. and that is a good thing in many ways.

I built the car that I wanted to build for myself and while that was gratifying in many ways the truth of the matter is I need a third car nowadays that can either be one that I have no fear of driving on a track or one that I can drive on a daily basis.. and paranoia of damaging this car doing either of those tasks made it all but impossible for me to enjoy it like I should have, hence my decision to sell it.

Thanks George I appreciate the compliment and coming from you it means a great deal. Trust me, I have quite a few more projects waiting in the wings and still have two Sciroccos in my "collection" that now deserve some attention.

Ahh the good ol' days: H20 2001...

A beautiful Scirocco indeed! I had the same tall 5th in my Caddy and I'd love to have its highway fuel economy these days!!

As for budgeting a project like this, I would recommend setting aside $10k-15k or so to strip down, remove the glass and make it new again. Yes, if you do some work yourself you'll save money but most of us don't have that kind of time anymore now that we are older, have kids, etc. - 300hrs or so might be a safe place to start.

When spending that kind of money, you pretty much are setting the car up to be a as reliable as a new car. I had well over $10k into my Caddy16v project over a span of 5 years and it was extremely reliable. Ok, I did blow one fire ring in the head gasket coming back from the Maple Grove show but after that she was a champ!

Great to see this car again. I saw it a few times in person and it looks better than any photograph shows. I also saw that trick 6 speed on the floor @ Eurojet. Nice stuff for sure. I didn't get the memo about it going away though

I had a Mk 1 Rabbit for what was supposed to be a month, that ended up a year and that Scirocco was definitely a benchmark car. Sadly I didn't have the time, money, or even space to do what you did with your car so I had to let it go. But there is something witching about the little buggers: Between the choice of my VRT daily driver or the Rabbit, I found myself going for the Rabbit more often

What a fantastic car, I absolutely love it.

What kind of numbers did the motor make? I have built a similar setup and haven't run it yet and am curious how my "prospected" #'s match up to what you had. You can't tell me something that lived at NGP for that long didn't get at least a pull?? Please share!

This thread is several years old now, but you can see more photos of the car here.

You can also try in the Scirocco forum which is here.

      Good luck
